In a battle of struggling teams, the Los Angeles Chargers host the Minnesota Vikings at SoFi Stadium on Thursday Night Football in Week 8, as I offer my best Vikings vs. Chargers prediction and NFL picks

Chargers QB Justin Herbert took the loss to the Indianapolis Colts on the chin after throwing two unnecessary picks. I expect him and his Chargers, the 2.5-point betting favorite, to recover and bounce back. The analysis below is part of the NFL predictions for Week 8

🏈 Vikings vs. Chargers prediction & betting preview

Stay ahead with the rest of our early NFL predictions for Week 8.

⚡️ Chargers -2.5 (-110) ⭐⭐⭐

The Vikings have lost three of the last five, and the Chargers three of the previous four, relinquishing top spot in the AFC West. Not only have the Denver Broncos leapfrogged them in the standings, but the Kansas City Chiefs joined them at 4-3 after another MVP-odds-contending Patrick Mahomes performance.

It could be another week of Carson Wentz under center for the Vikings, with J.J. McCarthy likely out for one more week. Despite Wentz racking up 313 passing yards against the Philadelphia Eagles, he missed some open targets at critical junctures and threw two picks.

Meanwhile, the Vikings' defense isn't the same without linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel, who hasn't played since the Week 3 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. His status is still unknown for the Week 8 clash. Even if he plays, he won't be at his best after missing so much time.

The Vikings had the sixth-best defensive pass DVOA entering Week 7 against the Eagles but were ripped apart by Jalen Hurts, who had a season-best 326 passing yards and three touchdown passes.

Even with his two interceptions against the Colts, I have more faith in Herbert, who has at least 300 passing yards in three of four home games. And he will be hellbent on taking care of the football. All of the best sports betting sites, except for FanDuel, offer odds at the standard juice of -110, and a winning $10 bet will profit $9.09.

At this early juncture, 74% of the best are on the Chargers to cover the 2.5-point spread. If the public support continues to disproportionately back the Chargers, the spread will increase to the key number of -3, possibly beyond.
