Betting against Patrick Mahomes as an against-the-spread underdog hasn't gone well for those who tried, as he is 12-2-1.
However, besides the fact that 1 point is as close to negligible as you can get, I don't have a ton of faith in the Chiefs after watching them get thoroughly outplayed by the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1.
Last season's Steve Spagnuolo-led defense had the fifth-best coverage unit and the eighth-best pressure grade (PFF). While it's only been one week, the pass defense looked palpably inferior against a rampant Justin Herbert, who didn't have nearly as much success against Kansas City in either game last season.
Spagnuolo's defense must prioritize stopping the Eagles' ground game, especially with how comparatively ineffective their pass attack was against the Dallas Cowboys. That could leave holes for Hurts to exploit with his arm.
The Eagles have a much more well-rounded offense, and my faith in the Chiefs' attack deteriorated after Xavier Worthy suffered his shoulder injury. The second-year wide receiver probably won't feature, leaving Mahomes with Hollywood Brown as his only downfield threat. The current situation sounds eerily similar to last season, which will again force Mahomes into being a checkdown quarterback.
That's unfortunate, considering the Eagles' biggest weakness defensively is in the secondary. With the matchup favoring Philly on both sides of the ball, I'm happy to take the standard -110 juice at BetMGM, Caesars, or bet365.

With Worthy unlikely to feature and fellow Chiefs' wide receiver Rashee Rice out, Mahomes will likely be forced into a bunch of short, quick passes.
Despite the uncertainty in the Eagles' secondary, he won't be confident in testing the downfield waters frequently. In addition, Mahomes hit the Under in 10 of the last 12 games.
He hasn't thrown a pick in seven straight regular-season games and nine of the previous 10. Of the best sports betting sites, DraftKings provides the best value. Its -118 odds would yield an $8.47 profit. At the lowest end of the market, FanDuel's -130 odds would profit $7.69.
