It’s been a season to forget for the Carolina Panthers, who look to be on the brink of a full-on rebuild. One of the bright spots has been the play of undrafted third-string quarterback P.J. Walker, although mistakes and inconsistencies have also shown that he might not be capable of taking on the role full-time. The mystery surrounding who will be under center is an interesting storyline heading into TNF, with a pair of former top-three draft picks in slingers Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield also ready for game action.
Darnold threw more interceptions than touchdowns in his first season with Carolina (2021), but could see some snaps if interim head coach Steve Wilks wants to mix things up. Mayfield looked decent last week in what was his first game action since Week 5, but they still lost as the defense just didn’t have an answer for the Bengals’ ground game. Back in 2018, Mayfield went 17-for-20 for 216 yards and three passing touchdowns against Atlanta as a member of the Cleveland Browns, so history is there if nothing else.
Walker was under center when the Panthers last played the Falcons in Week 8. It was a narrow defeat, as Atlanta won 37-34 in OT off a Younghoe Koo field goal. It was a devastating loss for Walker and Carolina, especially considering he had hit wideout D.J. Moore with a 62-yard hail Mary touchdown pass to tie the game with just 12 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, Panthers kicker Eddy Pineiro missed a deep PAT thanks to an unsportsmanlike penalty, and the Falcons made them pay in extra time.
