Can Aaron Donald make history by claiming his fourth Defensive Player of the Year Award? Let's look at the best picks and odds for NFL defensive player of the year in 2022.

Eight of the last 10 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award winners have recorded at least 11 sacks, and oddsmakers favor the league’s top pass-rushers in 2022. Myles Garrett, reigning award-winner T.J. Watt, and three-time winner Aaron Donald lead the way on the 2022 DPOY oddsboard.

Here are our best bets for the 2022 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award, based on the odds at our top-rated sportsbooks (odds via BetMGM and FanDuel Sportsbook).

Who Will Win the 2022 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award?

Myles Garrett (+700)

Garrett has said he won't set foot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame until the defender is inducted. He can take a big step toward achieving that goal if Garrett can secure the Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2022. The menacing pass-rusher is either the favorite or co-favorite at virtually every betting site after setting the Cleveland Browns’ single-season sack record in 2021 with 16.

If the 2017 first overall draft pick is going to break through and win his first DPOY crown, he’ll need to put together a complete season. He’s struggled with that over the last three years. After compiling 10 sacks over his first 10 games in 2019, Garrett missed the final six contests due to a suspension for swinging his helmet. Then COVID-19 and injuries derailed promising campaigns in 2020 and 2021.

TJ Watt (+800)

Watt tied Michael Strahan’s single-season record with 22.5 sacks in 2021, marking the second consecutive campaign in which he’s led the NFL in that category. He did that despite suiting up in just 15 games. Watt also set a record for the highest sack rate in the Next Gen Stats era (minimum of 300 pass rushes), and he was second in the NFL in QB pressure rate. Amazingly, he’ll still be one short of J.J. Watt’s three DPOY titles if the younger brother repeats as the winner.

Creating turnovers is how T.J. sets himself apart from other pass-rushers. Watt has forced 22 fumbles — twice as many as Garrett — while pouncing on seven.

Aaron Donald (+900)

Along with J.J. Watt, the Rams’ superstar defensive lineman is one of just two active players with three Defensive Player of the Year awards. Voter fatigue may have ruined his chances to break that tie with Watt in 2021. Donald finished a distant third in voting while securing just three of 50 votes. He did that despite leading Pro Football Focus’ player grades and topping all defensive players in PFF Wins Above Replacement.

The Rams' defense wasn't as good as expected, which also may have hurt Donald’s DPOY chances. The unit ranked in the middle of the pack in points allowed after leading the NFL in that category in 2020. Donald should get a lot more recognition if Los Angeles’ defense returns to its typical stellar form in 2022.
