Garoppolo led the 49ers to a 24-9 victory over the Los Angeles Rams in Week 4. That was his second straight start after taking over for the injured Trey Lance. San Francisco improved to 2-2 both straight up and against the spread.
The Panthers may be wishing they had traded for Garoppolo rather thank Mayfield in the offseason. The former first overall pick is 1-3 with his new team after a 26-16 loss to the Arizona Cardinals last week.

The 49ers have received the overwhelming majority of support from bettors into Sunday morning. Arizona has drawn 81% of the tickets and 79% of the handle on the spread. As a result, the consensus opening spread of 49ers -3 has grown to 6.5 points.
The Over/Under remains at the consensus opening line with 64% of the tickets on the Under accounting for a more modest 53% of the handle.

It’s not easy backing a team that lost 10 of its last 11 overall and eight of its last nine at home, but those stats are a reason to catch nearly a touchdown with the hosts. That’s a ton of points with a total this low, and I’m not convinced the 49ers can generate enough offense to pull away for a comfortable victory.
San Francisco’s defense gets lots of attention as the league’s top-ranked in points and yards allowed. Look closer at the San Fran attack, however, and there’s cause for concern. The Niners’ offense has been held to 17 points or less in three of four games (seven of 24 points last week came on an interception return for a TD) to sit fifth-last in points per game.
17 is a magic number for the Panthers, who lost 24 straight games when their opponent scored above those digits. Carolina should hang with the lower-scoring 49ers and stay within this number.

49ers game totals have been lower than they were last year, but oddsmakers still haven't caught up with how low-scoring San Fran’s games actually are. Going back to last season, the Niners went Under the total in nine of their last 10 matchups and 13 of their last 16. Five of their previous six contests featured less than 35 points.
Carolina’s an Under machine as well, staying low in three of four games this season as new Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield struggles to find any success. The Panthers’ 19.5 PPG average may actually be flattering for a squad 24th in rushing, 30th in passing and dead last in total yards.

After putting up 1,000-yard seasons in each of the last three years, Carolina’s top receiver DJ Moore hasn't built any chemistry with Mayfield. Moore even threw shade at his new QB in a recent interview, suggesting he’s been getting open just as much this year as he did the previous three.
Moore went Under this number in each of Carolina’s first four games, but this bet is as much of a fade of Mayfield as it is of the star wideout. Mayfield isn’t racking up many yards to any receiver, finishing below 200 passing in each of his last three starts and averages just 187 per outing. Meanwhile, San Fran allowed a paltry 161.3 yards per game through the air.
