After rallying from 19 points down in the second half to pull off a stunning first-round victory, No. 11 seed VCU will face No. 3 Illinois on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 7:50 p.m. ET from Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, S.C., airing on CBS.

While there is a chance the Rams' legs are a bit tired, the market has already baked that in with the Fighting Illini favored by 11.5. That's why my VCU vs. Illinois prediction backs VCU as an underdog as part of March Madness predictions this weekend.

🏆 Who will win VCU vs. Illinois?

See the latest March Madness odds for every team in the 2026 NCAA Tournament.

I predict a nine-point win for Illinois against VCU in their Round of 32 matchup on Saturday. Illinois is the much better team, but the double-digit spread doesn't show enough respect for a VCU squad that is 17-1 since mid-January.

Score prediction: Illinois 81, VCU 72

💰 VCU vs. Illinois prediction & best bet

VCU Over 69.5 points (-110)

While I see a slight edge on VCU's spread, I prefer backing its team total, as it's essentially the same bet. The Rams won't be able to keep pace with the best offensive team in college basketball without scoring 70-plus points.

Assuming the Rams' legs aren't completely dead, they have some advantages in this matchup. The Fighting Illini don't force any turnovers, ranking 365th in defensive turnover rate. Their rotations are also a concern, as they rank in the 22nd percentile in covering pass-outs on ball screens, per BBall Index. VCU's offense is in the 84th percentile on such plays, as its 3-pointing clip (36.9%) ranks 30th in the country.

The best way to get over tired legs is to make shots. I'm optimistic that VCU can knock down enough to stay in this game. This total is painted 70.5 across the board, so I'm grabbing the lone 69.5 at Caesars.

🔥 Best VCU vs. Illinois player prop bet

Terrence Hill Jr. Over 3.5 assists (+105)

The guy making the decisions on all these ball screens for VCU is Terrance Hill Jr. He was incredible in Round 1, finishing with 34 points and five assists in the win over North Carolina.

Illinois runs a lot of drop coverage, which Hill can exploit as both a scorer and a facilitator. Yet I wouldn't be surprised if the passing lanes are a bit more open following his performance on Thursday.

Hill has cleared this assist line in two of his previous four outings, so I like getting a plus-money price on this prop for Saturday.

🚀 VCU vs. Illinois same-game parlay

The only place to shop Hill's assist prop is bet365, which is why my VCU vs. Illinois parlay was cooked up there. Consider me a Rams guy for Saturday, since this SGP has three legs, all tied to their being competitive as huge underdogs in the Round of 32.

💵 VCU vs. Illinois SGP picks

  • VCU +11.5
  • VCU Over 70.5
  • Terrence Hill Jr. Over 3.5 assists

💡 How I'm betting VCU vs. Illinois: March Madness strategy

Follow all of our college basketball analysis and expert predictions for March Madness.

My initial instinct was to fade VCU after a huge comeback in an overtime win against North Carolina on Thursday. But the market was all over that, which has created some value in the Rams.

After all, these players are in the best shape of their lives playing for a spot in the Sweet 16. If they can't manage this turnaround, what hope do I have of getting off the couch after this weekend?

Let's go, Rams. Do it for me.

📊 Live VCU vs. Illinois odds: March Madness Round 2

Illinois is now favored by 11.5 after the line opened at 10.5, while the total has gone from 153.5 to 151.5. I'd expect there to be more Over bets before Saturday's tipoff, but the spread probably won't move much.
