The best part of the NCAA Tournament is all the surprises, from upsets to Cinderella runs to the Sweet 16, but who are the teams that could shock us by pushing to the final weekend of March Madness?
With this being a season defined by three powers up top (Duke, Michigan, and Arizona), my March Madness sleepers focus on a pair of top 10 teams with longer odds that are capable of winning it all, and a feisty SEC program led by an All-American.
I looked at some other sleepers and potential Cinderella teams with my March Madness bracket predictions.
🟠 Illinois odds to win March Madness (+1800)
- Seed projection: No. 2
- KenPom ranking: No. 5
- Key metric: No. 1 in the country in adjusted offensive efficiency
Why Illinois is being slept on
A trio of losses early in the season and a trio of overtime losses late in the season have made Illinois a difficult team to gauge. With seven losses already, Illinois is likely to have more than any other top-two seed, but it's also battle-tested. The Fighting Illini played a top-20 schedule and still produced the No. 1-rated offense in the country.
Why Illinois can win it all
Brad Underwood's team has a superstar in guard Keaton Wagler (18.1 PPG), who's surrounded by absurd length and a potent 3-point attack. Seven of the players in Illinois' eight-man rotation stand between 6-foot-6 and 7-foot-2, and six of the eight average at least one made three per game.
This is a championship-level roster. It has a player capable of taking over in crunch time (Wagler), veteran guards (Kylan Boswell, Andrej Stojakovic), efficient 3-point shooters in the frontcourt (David Mirkovic, Jake Davis, Ben Humrichous), and two seven-footers (Tomislav and Zvonimir Ivisic).
Of all the teams with longer than +1000 March Madness odds, Illinois is the best bet on the board.
⚔️ Michigan State odds to win March Madness (+5000)
- Seed projection: No. 2
- KenPom ranking: No. 9
- Key metric: Only team in the country that's top five in assist and rebound rate
Why Michigan State is being slept on
Ill-timed losses and inconsistency have killed the buzz around Michigan State as a legitimate contender. But despite dropping games to two unranked programs on the road in February (Minnesota, Wisconsin), few teams in the country have perfected the team-first mentality that MSU plays with, which has helped Sparty win more Quad 1 games than any team outside of the four biggest March Madness favorites.
Why Michigan State can win it all
The Spartans have Mr. March, and Tom Izzo is one of just seven active coaches who have won the NCAA Tournament. Beyond having one of the greatest bench bosses of all-time, Michigan State's big four is fierce.
Not only do they have one of the best point guards in the country, projected All-American Jeremy Fears Jr., but they have size and athleticism up front. The frontcourt of Coen Carr, Jaxon Kohler, and Carson Cooper gives Izzo athleticism and size to lean on, which is why Sparty has an elite defense.
There's no way Michigan State's odds should be in the same range as Purdue, Kansas, and Gonzaga, making Izzo's program the best longer shot value on the board.
🐗 Arkansas odds to make Final Four (+1400)
- Seed projection: No. 5
- KenPom ranking: No. 18
- Key metric: No. 1 in the country in turnover rate (12.3%)
Why Arkansas is being slept on
Between the SEC taking a step back this season from last year's record-breaking year, and Florida's sheer dominance in the conference down the stretch, Arkansas is a program that hasn't received the flowers it deserves. While John Calipari's team dropped five conference games, four of them came on the road, and its other three losses this year were away from home to top 10 teams.
Why Arkansas can make the Final Four
Calipari has once again found himself with a superstar freshman guard destined to be an NBA lottery pick. Darius Acuff Jr. is maybe the best Kemba Walker candidate in the country, a player capable of dragging his team on an NCAA Tournament run. The freshman is top 10 nationally in PPG (22.2) and top 20 in APG (6.4).
Acuff is as good as it gets at guard in college basketball, and the Razorbacks have enough around him to potentially pull off a few upsets and reach the final weekend of March Madness. Fellow freshman guard Maleek Thomas is a dynamic 3-point shooter, forwards Billy Richmond III and Trevon Brazile embrace the dirty work, and Karter Knox may return to the court for the NCAA Tournament.
Last year, Calipari took Arkansas to the Sweet 16 with a less talented roster, and Acuff could take them further. The Razorbacks are my favorite Final Four bet of any team sitting between +1400 and +2200.
❓ March Madness sleeper FAQs
What is a March Madness sleeper?
A March Madness sleeper is an NCAA Tournament team that isn't expected to win it all (Illinois, Michigan State), or make a deep run (Arkansas). There are different types of sleepers, from mid-major Cinderellas that push to the Sweet 16 to non-No. 1 seeds that win the NCAA Tournament. Every March Madness sees a handful of sleeper teams overachieve.
Are sleeper teams good bets to win March Madness?
It depends on your definition of a sleeper. While 26 of the last 40 NCAA Tournament champions have been No. 1 seeds, 11 of them have been teams seeded between No. 2 and No. 4. Picking a team outside of the top four seeds to win it all would be a bad bet, but if everything clicks, a non-No. 1 seed can win it all.
What's the difference between a sleeper and a Cinderella?
Usually, a sleeper team is a program that's well known but isn't expected to make the Final Four or win it all. Meanwhile, a Cinderella is a mid-major team that upsets programs on its way to a Sweet 16, or even Final Four. In the last 40 NCAA Tournaments, 89 double-digit seeds have made the Sweet 16 but only seven have made the Final Four.
Has a sleeper or Cinderella won the NCAA Tournament?
This depends on your definition of sleeper and Cinderella. In the last 40 NCAA Tournaments, five No. 2 seeds have won it all, four No. 3 seeds, two No. 4 seeds, and one No. 6, No. 7, and No. 8 seed has taken home the March Madness crown.
