No. 9 Iowa and No. 8 Clemson meet tonight in a grinding first-round matchup at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, with the Hawkeyes installed as 1.5-point favorites ahead of a 6:50 p.m. ET tip on TNT. Iowa's balanced efficiency profile - 31st in adjusted offense, 30th in adjusted defense - gives it an edge in what projects as a low-scoring, half-court battle.

My best Iowa vs. Clemson prediction leans on the experience edge the Hawkeyes carry after six Drake transfers followed Ben McCollum to Iowa City. My March Madness predictions also target a Clemson player I expect to struggle distributing against Iowa's assist-suppressing defense.

Two-thirds of spread bets are siding with Iowa, and the Hawkeyes are drawing 59% of moneyline action as well. The total sits at 130.5, one of the lowest in the tournament, with 71% of bets on the Over despite the number already dropping from its 130.5 open.

πŸ† Who will win Iowa vs. Clemson?

I'm taking Iowa to win by three points. The Hawkeyes play Clemson's measured half-court style more efficiently than Clemson plays it, with balance on offense and defense that the Tigers lack due to their inferior offense. Iowa should make key free throws late to secure a win.

Score prediction: Iowa 67, Clemson 64

πŸ’° Iowa vs. Clemson prediction & best bet

See the latest March Madness odds for every team in the 2026 NCAA Tournament.

Iowa ML (-135)

At 25th in KenPom, I feel Iowa is stronger than a typical 9-seed. The Hawkeyes rank 31st and 30th in adjusted offensive and defensive efficienciesβ€”balance that historically bodes well in this tournament.

Clemson's offensive efficiency (71st) is the outlier to note in this matchup, as Iowa's profile contains fewer flaws for a game flow between teams with stylistic similarities (adjusted tempos at 357th and 333rd, respectively).

With few points and possessions expected, I lean toward the more-balanced Hawkeyes, who also happen to be the group with stronger free-throw efficiency (77.0%, 33rd) to close out a close game.

Follow all of our college basketball analysis and expert predictions for March Madness.

Ace Buckner Under 2.5 assists (-135)

Similar to Clemson defensively, Iowa suppresses assists, allowing just 11.6 per game. Though Clemson allows even fewer (10.6 per game), we want to pair up this tendency of the Hawkeyes defensively with the Tigers general deficit in this regard.

As a team, Clemson averages just 12.8 assists per game (231st) and doesn't project to rack them up here. Freshman Ace Buckner has been distributing effectively coinciding with an increase to his minutes recently, but he's cleared this assist total in just 10 of 34 games this season (29.4%).

Though Buckner is trending up with 3+ assists in three of his past four games, I'm looking to target his Under as this feels like the wrong matchup in which to adjust his assists line up to 2.5.

πŸš€ Iowa vs. Clemson same-game parlay

While the pace to this game could be truly glacial, Iowa and Clemson saw their combined Quad 1 results clear 129 total points in 23 out of 26 games this season. Iowa's offensive superiority and free-throw shooting should help in a Hawkeyes win. I don't necessarily think this game needs Buckner's assist prowess to clear 129 points, so that contrarian prop play boosts our parlay odds at bet365.

πŸ’‘ How I'm betting Iowa vs. Clemson: March Madness strategy

I'm allocating enough units to win one unit per straight bet, with a half-unit laid on the SGP. These teams are quite similar in a game with tight anticipated margins. We like the read, with Iowa emerging given the wealth of experience on the roster, but this isn't a spot to overextend with our bankroll.

πŸ“Š Live Iowa vs. Clemson odds: March Madness First Round

Iowa's moneyline has drifted from its -145 opener down to -125 at BetMGM, suggesting the market sees this as closer to a coinflip than the early number implied. The total remains at 130.5, one of the lowest totals on the board this round, and hasn't budged despite 71% of bets landing on the Over.
