🏀 Illinois vs. UConn Prediction & Picks: March Madness Final Four Preview
Last Updated: April 3, 2026 12:02 PM EDT • 4 minute read X Social Google News Link
After one of the most improbable wins in March Madness history, No. 2 seed UConn takes on a surging No. 3-seeded Illinois team in the Final Four as Dan Hurley looks to win his third NCAA Tournament title in four years.
However, my Illinois vs. UConn prediction for Saturday's 6:09 p.m. ET tip (TBS/truTV, HBO Max) from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis expects the Fighting Illini's defense to be too much for the Huskies.
Illinois is a 1.5-point betting favorite in its first Final Four in 21 years, and our March Madness predictions project a decisive victory for Brad Underwood and Co.

🏆 Who will win Illinois vs. UConn in the Final Four?
See the latest March Madness odds for every team in the Final Four.
Despite UConn's recent success under Hurley, this Illinois team is a mismatch for the Huskies. With the Fighting Illini's improved defensive play (No. 11 in efficiency in the NCAA Tournament) and ridiculous length (the tallest team in the country), I'm projecting Illinois to beat this offensively inept UConn team by four points.
Score prediction: Illinois 71, UConn 67
💰 Illinois vs. UConn prediction & Final Four best bet
Illinois -1.5 (-115)
Since the beginning of the NCAA Tournament, Illinois has been a different team defensively. The Fighting Illini are top-15 in effective field-goal percentage allowed (45.5%) and No. 2 in defensive free-throw rate (9.8%).
UConn's offense has been sporadic all season and doesn't do itself any favors (No. 178 in turnover rate, No. 306 in free-throw rate). That's continued in the tournament with the Huskies shooting just 29% from threes.
It hasn't helped that UConn has slipped outside the top 20 in defensive efficiency in the tournament either, and now must slow the No. 1 team in offensive efficiency.
📡 SBR Edge: Size matters
UConn's offensive issues have been somewhat hidden thanks to big man Tarris Reed bullying smaller opponents. But the Huskies haven't had to deal with a frontcourt as big as Illinois' ... the Fighting Illini's top five forwards average height is over 6-foot-9.
That length will cause issues for UConn's defense as well, with Illinois' ability to dominate the glass and earn second-chance opportunities behind the No. 3 offensive rebound rate in the country (39.5%).
🔥 Best Illinois vs. UConn player prop bet: Final Four 2026
Keaton Wagler Over 17.5 points (+100)
Wagler is the only projected top 10 pick left in the NCAA Tournament, and he continues to bolster his NBA draft stock. The freshman is averaging 17.5 PPG in March Madness, while shooting 44% from deep.
UConn's 3-point defense has dipped to No. 53 during March Madness (35.3%), and Wagler's ability to get to the charity stripe (No. 5 in free throw attempts per game in the Big Ten) will be a problem for a Huskies defense that's No. 307 in defensive free throw rate this season (40.5%).
Wagler is No. 2 in the country in offensive rating (131.1) among players who use at least 24% of possessions (25.4%), and his usage is only increasing in the NCAA Tournament (21.5 combined field goal and free throw attempts per game since the Sweet 16).
🚀 Illinois vs. UConn same-game parlay: Final Four 2026
Illinois' defense is the reason it's in the Final Four, and it has the size to match UConn while exploiting the Huskies' offensive inefficiencies. While Illinois has the depth and size to shut down Hurley's team's one-dimensional offensive approach, it also has the perfect player to carry its own offense against UConn.
Wagler's 3-point shooting and ability to get to the free-throw line should spark Illinois down the stretch.

💡 How I'm betting Illinois vs. UConn: Final Four strategy
Follow all of our college basketball analysis and expert predictions for March Madness.
UConn is getting too much respect from our best March Madness betting sites. The Huskies are the only team in the Final Four with a net rating below +30.0, and the defense that's kept them ranked in the top 10 all season has struggled in the NCAA Tournament.
Illinois is one of the worst possible matchups for Hurley's squad, with its size, offensive efficiency, and improved defensive play.
That's why I'd be willing to put a full unit on Illinois to cover up to -3.5, and I'd take the Over on Wagler's point total (17.5) with a price as short as -115.
📊 Live Illinois vs. UConn odds: Final Four 2026
Illinois opened as a 2.5-point betting favorite at our best sports betting sites, but unsurprisingly, the line has moved in UConn's direction. Between the Huskies' blue blood brand name, their recent success under Hurley, and the way they beat Duke, I could see the public moving this line even further - 59% of bettors are already on UConn to cover +1.5.
