Still, I want some exposure to the Minnesota moneyline (+105) in this matchup. This line would easily close in Minnesota’s favor should Edwards get ruled in.

Did ESPN make a mistake? Tonight’s Timberwolves-Suns game is on national television at the same time as the Lakers-Clippers game. I’d rather watch Luka Doncic and LeBron James play for the red-hot Lakers than Devin Booker or Edwards fight for scraps at the bottom of the Western Conference, but here we are. Oh well. 

Motivation is a key factor here. Since the All-Star Break, the Suns have allowed an NBA-high 21.8 fastbreak points per game on their way to a 2-4 record and a league-worst defensive rating (121.7). The Timberwolves, who were sixth in defensive rating before the break, are 24th since (117.6). They’ve gone 1-4 over that span.

Ultimately, the Timberwolves are just one game out of the sixth seed, while the Suns are 3.5 games out of the play-in tournament. It’s only March, so both sides have plenty of time to turn things around, but with the drama in Phoenix’s locker room, I’m deeply skeptical. I predict the Minnesota Timberwolves will beat the Phoenix Suns by a final score of Timberwolves 114, Suns 109.

The Suns just don’t care anymore, especially on the defensive end. They were already shaky on that side of the floor before the break, but they’ve reached new lows after it. Coughing up the most fastbreak points per game with the worst defensive rating over a six-game sample is signal, not noise.

Of all Minnesota’s players, who stands to benefit more than Edwards? He’s fresh after missing the second leg of a back-to-back on Friday due to a suspension. He leads Minnesota in fastbreak points per game, and, while he may now have to contend with Julius Randle again, the veteran forward is likely on a minutes limit.

Edwards hung 33 on the Suns back in January alongside both Randle and Rudy Gobert. Gobert is on the shelf, freeing up a bit more space for Edwards in the paint; since the start of the 2023-24 season, Edwards is averaging 27.3 points per game without him. Randle has spent 97% of his minutes at the four this year, but with almost all of his games coming alongside Gobert, that isn’t a surprise. With him out, we could see some smaller lineups featuring Randle but no Naz Reid.

The best sports betting sites are having a tough time projecting Reid this evening. Most have his points prop between 18.5 and 20.5, so getting Under 20.5 at -120? Sign me up. That’s two points on the best 18.5 numbers for only about 5% of implied probability. 

It may feel weird to fade Reid against such a bad defense, but this line is getting out of control. Reid has exploded for 21-plus points in six of his last seven appearances, but he is averaging only 20.7 through that stretch.

Across 47 of Reid’s games alongside Randle, he owns an average of 13.6 points per game, clearing 20.5 just twice.

Let’s wrap things up with a plus-money player prop. I’m obviously a major skeptic of the Phoenix defense, and that extends to just about every facet. The Suns' perimeter defense is no exception. Since the All-Star Break, Phoenix has allowed the third-most corner 3-pointers and the sixth-most above-the-break 3-pointers per game.

Enter Jaden McDaniels. While he has struggled with perimeter shooting this year - his 32.5% 3-point percentage is down from 2023-24 (33.7%) and 2022-23 (39.8) - this is a fantastic get-right spot for him. 

McDaniels shot 2-for-3 from deep against Phoenix in both November and January. With Minnesota more pressed for depth, a few more looks should come his way, especially in transition.
