Lakers fans are already cooking up Russell trades after his performance in the season opener. He finished with nine points and five assists, but the Minnesota Timberwolves are a bad matchup for him, given their length in the backcourt.

Here’s what actually matters: Russell led the Lakers in passes made (67) and was second in potential assists (12). The Over on 5.5 assists closed at +108 on FanDuel, suggesting this +126 price tag is a solid value for a game with a similar total.

Russell should succeed more against a smaller Phoenix backcourt on Friday, and a projection of 5.8 assists provides a 14.6% edge on this player prop.

We cashed this bet in the opener when James finished with 16 points on 7-for-16 shooting and five rebounds. The theory behind the play was that James was starting to show his age in the preseason — or at least going through a slower ramp-up process to begin the season.

While the line has dropped from 31.5 to 30.5, I still find value in fading James as a scorer and rebounder. His usage rate in the opener was 22.4%, well below his career mark of 31.5 and last year’s clip of 29.2. His rebound rate of 7.4% was worse than his career 11.3% clip.

As long as this line is above 30, I will keep betting on this prop until James performs better. Caesars offers a -109 value for this Under, whereas other sites with the best sportsbook promos offer as high as -125.

It seems crazy that I’ve waited this long to talk about Lakers big man Anthony Davis, who was phenomenal in Game 1. While I see slight value on his points prop (24.5) again, I prefer to bet on his defense by fading Suns center Nurkić.

Nurkić cleared his PRA prop in an overtime win against the Clippers, finishing with 11 points, nine rebounds, and two assists. However, he only attempted five shots and played 22 minutes while the Suns rotated three centers.

Consider me skeptical that Nurkić will clear this prop without overtime or a usage/minutes bump against one of the best defensive players in the league. I project this number closer to 19.5, so I’m jumping on this Under at DraftKings.
