Browne: Atlanta Hawks Over 113.5 (-110)
New Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd hasn't experienced much success as a coach so far. He went 23-22 before being fired during his last season as head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks. The next campaign under Mike Budenholzer, the Bucks went 60-22. That was due in large part to the team going from 19th in defensive ranking under Kidd to first under Coach Bud.
That doesn't necessarily mean the Mavs will struggle defensively because Kidd has arrived. But Rick Carlisle, the man Kidd replaced, has one of the NBA's best basketball minds. His personality was the problem in Dallas, not his coaching ability.
However, Dallas finished 20th in defensive ranking while allowing 112.3 points per 100 possessions in 2020-21. This isn't a great spot for the Mavericks against an Atlanta Hawks team that overachieved last season. Their crowd will be very excited to see a young squad in action, and I expect a fast-paced game. The Hawks will fly over this 113.5 total.
Wharton: Golden State Warriors Under 115.5 (-110)
The Warriors were as impressive as possible during their season-opening win over the Lakers. Their 121-114 victory featured a balanced output. It’s not often Steph Curry goes 5-for-21 shooting from the field and the Warriors win.
Their second game against the Clippers will likely look different. The Clippers are a superior defensive team and offer more shooting variance due to their roster construction. The Lakers only hit 15 of their 42 attempts from deep against Golden State while getting to the free-throw line 19 times.
This game will be a grind, and the Warriors' bench will struggle to produce nearly as much as it did in their opener. After all, bench guys are inconsistent by nature. I like the under on Golden State's aggressive 115.5 total.
Ducey: Clippers Over 112.5 (-115)
The Warriors' defense is a bit overvalued following their win over the Lakers. There wasn't a defender within four feet to contest 37 of the Lakers' 42 3-point attempts, according to NBA.com. Their three-point defense was nothing more than good luck.
The Clippers led the way in 3-point percentage last campaign and all of their shooters have returned, with the exception of the injured Kawhi Leonard.
The Clippers will win this game outright, and there's value on their team total in this matchup with the club's focus on threes.
Swinging Johnson: Heat Under 111.5 (-120)
The Miami Heat will welcome the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks to the FTX Arena tonight. The Bucks swept the Heat out of the playoffs last season while limiting Miami to just 98 points per game, one of which went into overtime.
This will be the Heat’s season opener, and it wouldn’t shock me if they're a bit rusty and out of sync, especially against a team that stifled their offense so effectively last year.
Top NBA Player Prop Bets Picks
Browne: Antetokounmpo Under 28.5 (-105)
Antetokounmpo averaged 16.7 points per game over three regular-season matchups against the Miami Heat last season. In the playoffs, he raised that average to 23.5 points per contest.
Miami really knows how to slow Giannis down, and now the Heat have added his former teammate P.J. Tucker, one of the league's best defenders. The combination of Bam Adebayo and Tucker should be able to keep Giannis under 28.5 points.
Wharton: Bledsoe Over 12.5 (-125)
On his third team in as many years, Eric Bledsoe is trying to find his final home as the 31-year-old's career winds down. Bledsoe is a solid regular-season starter who's averaged under 15.9 points per game just once since 2013-14. Going back to the Clippers offers him a good opportunity to take on a larger scoring load, especially with Leonard not healthy yet.
He averaged 12.5 points per game against the Warriors last year on a Pelicans team with a weaker scheme and far fewer scoring opportunities to offer. Bledsoe is in a healthier environment this season, and the Warriors' perimeter defense isn't effective enough to slow him.
Ducey: Bogdanovic Over 2.5 Threes
The Mavericks refused to play defense during last year's postseason. They produced defensive ratings above 115 points in five out of seven games against the Clippers, and even allowed nearly a 47% shooting night from distance.
Bogdanovic, meanwhile, is an exceptional shooter who averaged 3.3 3-pointers per game last season.
I love this spot, especially with the sharpshooter drawing Tim Hardaway Jr. and his horrific defense.
Swinging Johnson: Allen Over 2.5 3-Pointers Made (-160)
Milwaukee’s Donte DiVincenzo will be sidelined for this game while nursing an injured ankle, which means we should see even more of Grayson Allen. Expect the Duke product to be firing treys throughout the night.
In Allen's first game with his new team, he went 3-for-10 shooting from beyond the arc. He should at least duplicate that production from Tuesday night, as Allen will likely be left alone outside the perimeter on Thursday.
