Wyndham Championship Odds, Picks and PGA Tour Preview: Stage Set for Zalatoris' First Win

Last updated: August 1, 2022 9:51 AM EDT • 6 min read X Social Google News Link

The 2021-22 PGA Tour regular season concludes this week at Sedgefield Country Club. There's no consensus favorite for the season finale as we preview the Wyndham Championship and make our top picks for the outright winner.
Kevin Kisner will defend his 2021 title in Greensboro, NC, in the final event ahead of the 2022 FedEx Cup Playoffs. Will Zalatoris enters the week as the top-ranked player in the field in both the season-long points race and the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), at Nos. 11 and 14, respectively. The reigning PGA Tour Rookie of the Year remains in search of career win No. 1 on the PGA Tour.
Despite Zalatoris' rankings in the field, his odds to win this week range from +1200 to +1600, as he varies from first to third on the odds board. Shane Lowry, Sungjae Im, and Webb Simpson are among the other favorites. Luckily for each of them, Tony Finau is taking a week off after back-to-back victories at the 3M Open and Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Here are my top outright picks for the 2022 Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club (odds via our top-rated sportsbooks).

Wyndham Championship Odds Analysis
Zalatoris is the closest golfer to a consensus favorite this week with at least a share of the top odds at DraftKings Sportsbook, Caesars Sportsbook, and PointsBet. FanDuel Sportsbook is alone in favoring Simpson, who won here in 2011 and has five straight top-10 finishes in this event. Kisner's odds to defend his title range from a low of +2900 via FanDuel to as high as +4000 via DraftKings, BetMGM, and Caesars.
Tyrrell Hatton is among the top value plays in the outright market this week, based on the OWGR. He ranks fifth in the field by that measure but has odds as high as +3500 at Caesars.
Sedgefield Country Club Course Profile
Par: 70Length: 7,131 yardsGreens: Bermuda
Sedgefield Country Club is the second straight PGA Tour stop that was originally designed by Donald Ross. There are some similarities to Detroit Golf Club, but the course is also comparable to the likes of TPC Sawgrass, TPC Potomac, TPC River Highlands, and TPC Twin Cities. An edge can be given to those in this field who played and had some measure of success at those venues, particularly in recent weeks.
Though the course features tight fairways and small greens, the winning score was -21 or better for five straight years before Kisner's playoff win at -15 last year. The emphasis this week will be placed on accuracy off the tee to follow the model of recent winners including Kisner, Jim Herman, J.T. Poston, Brandt Snedeker, and Henrik Stenson.
Power and distance aren't major advantages at Sedgefield. Ten of the 14 golfers to finish T-10 or better last year hit at least 62% of the fairways and only seven of 14 averaged more than 310 yards per drive. Ten of the 14 hit at least 79% of the greens in regulation.
Nine of the 18 holes played below par last year, including both par 5s and two of the four par 3s. Five par 4s scored below par for the tournament. The most common par-4 range is 400 to 450 yards, with eight such holes. Two exceed 500 yards and the shortest checks in at just 374 yards. Two par 3s exceed 200 yards.
Wyndham Championship Key Stats
Strokes gained: tee-to-greenSG: approachDriving accuracyGreens in regulation percentagePar-4 efficiency: 400-450 yardsBirdie or better percentage
As seen from the list of recent winners, as well as looks at those leaderboards, there's little preference for distance at this short par-70 venue. Quality ball striking and routinely hitting both fairways and greens are the biggest keys. Eight golfers who finished T-7 or better last year ranked among the top 12 in SG: tee-to-green for the week. Only one of the 23 golfers who finished T-15 or better lost strokes in that category.
Scoring needs to be done on the par 5s with any extra birdies on the shorter par 4s providing the added advantage to final scorecards.

Who Will Win the Wyndham Championship?
Zalatoris (+1600)
Zalatoris tied for second at the PGA Championship and U.S. Open to go along with a T-6 finish at the Masters and a T-5 showing at the Memorial Tournament before cooling down in the last month. He missed the cut at the Genesis Scottish Open, tied for 28th at The Open Championship, and tied for 20th at last week's Rocket Mortgage Classic.
He'll tee up at the Wyndham Championship for the second straight year and against one of the weakest fields he has played in during the 2022 portion of the season. The reigning Rookie of the Year tied for 29th in this event last year following a missed cut at Sedgefield CC in 2018. He gained strokes in all key areas in 2021, including an uncharacteristic 0.66 strokes per round with the putter on the Bermuda greens.
Zalatoris leads this field in SG: approach and ranks second in SG: tee-to-green over everyone's last 16 rounds, and he's first and second, respectively, on Tour in those metrics for the season. His main struggle is driving accuracy, but he still manages to hit 70.54% of greens in regulation to rank ninth for the season. He's 17th in birdie-or-better percentage, and Sedgefield Country Club represents the ideal location for his first PGA Tour victory.
Kim (+4000)
Joohyung Kim has risen from No. 131 to No. 34 in the OWGR entering this week. The 20-year-old South Korean finished seventh last week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic to go with a win, two runner-up finishes, and five other top-10 showings across the Asian and PGA Tours this year.
He ranks fourth in this field in SG: approach and sixth in SG: tee-to-green across his last 16 international rounds. He also gains strokes on and around the greens and won't offer this kind of value for much longer as his world ranking continues to improve.
Stallings (+7000)
Scott Stallings has racked up three consecutive top-10 finishes at the Travelers Championship (T-8), John Deere Classic (T-4), and Rocket Mortgage Classic (T-10). That brings his total for the year to four as he's moved from No. 193 to No. 113 in the OWGR. He has also soared up to No. 44 in the FEC standings with his late-season run.
Aside from Zalatoris and Kim, there are few hotter ball strikers on Tour. Stallings is sixth in SG: tee-to-green and fifth in SG: approach over the last two months. He's losing strokes on the putting surfaces, but the shorter venue should help problems caused by his erratic driver. He's also 42nd for the season in birdie or better percentage and 64th in par-4 efficiency: 400-450 yards.
