With almost exactly three years left until the next U.S. presidential election on Nov. 7, 2028, Vice President JD Vance remains the betting favorite by the presidential election odds to succeed President Donald Trump as the next commander in chief.

Vance has seen his odds across the best political betting sites (outside the U.S.) shorten in recent weeks down to +230, which implies a roughly 30% chance that he'll win the 2028 presidential election. Yet the overall gap has closed behind him with Democratic favorite Gavin Newsom skyrocketing to +380 for a roughly 20% chance to win.

Those two sit ahead of U.S. representative Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and businessman Donald Trump Jr., while former presidential candidates Pete Buttigieg and Ron DeSantis are tied for the fifth spot in a crowded field behind the favorites.

💰 Betting favorite to be next U.S. president: JD Vance (+230)

Vance opened as the betting favorite to succeed Trump when this market opened across Ontario sports betting sites shortly after the 2024 election, which the Republicans won handily. That margin alone is the biggest reason to back the GOP to maintain control of the White House - and Vance is priced at -150 to earn the Republican nomination.

The vice president has positioned himself as the heir apparent to the MAGA movement that has twice helped propel Trump to the presidency. He's also taken on a larger role with the popular conservative activist group Turning Point, which is currently "in the works" to support Vance as a 2028 candidate according to Erika Kirk, whose husband Charlie Kirk founded and ran the organization before his death in September.

Vance will face further scrutiny on the campaign trail if he does indeed pursue the presidency in 2028, but for now, he seems like the safest bet on the board among Republican candidates and in the race overall - even if that lead has narrowed of late.

✅ Prediction to be next U.S. president: Gavin Newsom (+380)

Betting on any of the favorites this far out from the election feels like a mistake in principle - just look at the last two election cycles. But if I had to choose one candidate at this juncture, it would be hard to rank anyone ahead of Newsom.

The California governor has been building name recognition for years as a rumored presidential candidate, and he was even briefly the favorite to replace Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee in the months before the 2024 election. But he's taken that up a notch in 2025, launching his own podcast this year while becoming a central figure on social media in the resistance against the Trump administration.

That has helped Newsom's stock soar from a 14/1 long shot in September to a roughly 30% chance of taking the presidency two months later. With the betting market and political pundits alike expecting Democratic wins in the midterms, I think there's value in backing a Democrat to the White House in 2028, and Newsom is the clear leader in the clubhouse.

🌰 Best long shot to be next U.S. president: JB Pritzker (+3500)

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker was among the final contenders to be Kamala Harris' running mate in the 2024 presidential election, and he carries some of the same general election appeal that first drew moderates to Trump in 2016: a former businessman and self-made billionaire (his net worth is reportedly almost $4 billion) who has made political donations over the years and is, in theory, less susceptible to the corruptions of money in politics.

He's also adopted the Newsom approach of standing up to Trump in highly visible ways, including going after the president through social media and TV appearances in response to the administration sending federal agents to Chicago. He's clearly earned the attention of Trump, who slammed the governor in his annual turkey pardons earlier this week.

That's why I'm surprised to see him still dealing as a 35/1 long shot, which implies less than a 3% chance that Pritzker wins the presidency. He won't need the backing of the party to fund his own campaign, so I fully expect him to make a run at the office next election cycle, by which point his odds almost certainly won't be this attractive.
