The Edmonton Elks look to build on last week's win over the Grey Cup odds-contending Montreal Alouettes when they host the Toronto Argonauts tonight at 9 p.m. ET (TSN, CFL+) from Commonwealth Stadium, and we're examining the matchup with our Argonauts vs. Elks predictions.

Between Cody Fajardo's emergence and Toronto's defensive struggles, I expect Edmonton to cover as the 3-point favorite at home.

While these are the CFL's two worst teams by record, Edmonton has been showing far more promise in recent weeks than the Argonauts. Since benching Canadian QB Tre Ford in favor of Fajardo, the Elks have been a much more competent team. They just handed Fajardo's former squad a loss in Montreal and dropped their previous two games, against the two best teams in the CFL (the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Hamilton Tiger-Cats), by just seven combined points.

Meanwhile, the Argonauts' defense is in shambles and doesn't look like it would even be capable of stopping last year's Waterloo Warriors team, which went winless in the OUA. With Edmonton in a far better place right now, I'm projecting a 31-24 win for Fajardo and Co. as part of my Argonauts vs. Elks predictions.

The Argonauts' defense is about as bad as it gets, especially after allowing 46 points at home against a 3-6 Ottawa Redblacks team last week. Toronto is giving up the most points per game in the CFL (32.4) and has surrendered at least 32 points in four of its last seven outings. That includes allowing 40-plus points in three of its previous five contests. So while Edmonton doesn't boast a world-beating offense, it can take advantage of this dreadful defensive unit.

Fajardo has thrown five touchdowns to just one interception while completing over 75% of his passes across his last three games. With playmakers like Justin Rankin, Steven Dunbar, and Kurleigh Gittens Jr. (plus Javon Leake on special teams), Edmonton should be able to score. And while Fajardo has been helping to transform Edmonton, its defense has been just as important to the team's recent competitive play.

The Elks have held their last three opponents to 23.6 points per game, which has been helping them cover the spread in two of their last three outings. So even with Toronto's offense proving it can score, its one-dimensional approach should hurt it.

Plus, Nick Arbuckle is the CFL's most turnover-prone QB, and star receiver Damonte Coxie is banged up.

👀 Argonauts vs. Elks player prop

⬆️ Cody Fajardo Over 272.5 passing yards ⭐⭐⭐⭐

📊 Best odds: -125 via DraftKings ($10 to win $8)

Toronto's pass defense is bad, and I'm surprised this line on Fajardo's passing yards isn't higher across the best sports betting apps in Canada. The former Grey Cup MVP has been one of the most efficient QBs in the CFL since taking over the starting job in Edmonton, and he's averaging 297.3 passing yards across the last three games.

He's hit the Over on this total twice in his three outings, and the Argonauts' defense doesn't look capable of slowing him down. Toronto is allowing the third-highest QB rating so far this season (107.9) to go with giving up the highest yards per attempt (9.85).
