The 2026 World Baseball Classic starts this week with 20 nations battling across four continents. So we trained AI on every roster, the current odds, historical WBC data, and pitching depth charts to generate predictions for every pool, a simulated bracket, best bets, and an MVP pick.
Our WBC AI predictions below were produced using Claude, the fast-growing AI model from Anthropic known for its advanced reasoning skills. As with any AI predictions, these should be viewed as entertainment. You can see the rest of our WBC 2026 odds & expert picks for our best (human) analysis for this month's tournament.
⚾ WBC Pool A predictions & preview (San Juan, Puerto Rico)
Teams: Puerto Rico, Canada, Cuba, Colombia, Panama
This is the most balanced pool in the tournament — and the hardest to call. No superstar-heavy favorite. No clear bottom-feeder. Every team has enough MLB talent to steal a game on any given night, and the home crowd at Hiram Bithorn Stadium gives Puerto Rico a legitimate edge.
AI Power Ranking:
- Puerto Rico — Lost Francisco Lindor and Carlos Correa to insurance issues, but still rolls out Edwin Diaz, Seth Lugo, Nolan Arenado and Heliot Ramos. The Hiram Bithorn crowd is one of the best home-field advantages in international baseball.
- Canada — The Naylor brothers (Josh and Bo), Tyler O'Neill and top prospect Owen Caissie give this lineup real thump. Jameson Taillon anchors the rotation. Canada has never advanced past pool play in WBC history. This is the year that changes.
- Cuba — Livan Moinelo, the NPB Pacific League MVP in 2025, is the best pitcher in this pool. Alfredo Despaigne, the all-time WBC home run leader, is back at age 39. Cuba's pitching is elite but the lineup is the thinnest of the contenders here.
- Colombia — Jose Quintana and Julio Teheran give the rotation veteran experience. Gio Urshela adds a reliable MLB bat. Colombia has improved dramatically over the last decade, but advancing from this pool is a tall order.
- Panama — Jose Caballero's speed (AL stolen base leader) and Edmundo Sosa provide excitement, but Panama lacks the pitching depth to survive a round-robin grind.
AI Prediction: Puerto Rico and Canada advance.
Upset Alert: Cuba's pitching, led by Moinelo, could steal a game from Puerto Rico and make tiebreakers a nightmare.
Pool A Best Bet: Canada to advance out of Pool A. This is the best roster they've ever assembled, and Pool A's balance means there's no juggernaut blocking them. Look for value on the moneyline in Canada's matchup vs. Colombia.
⚾ WBC Pool B predictions & preview (Houston)
Teams: USA, Mexico, Italy, Great Britain, Brazil
The group of death. Team USA brought the most talented roster in WBC history, but Mexico and Italy can both hang. This pool will produce the most watchable games of the first round.
AI Power Ranking:
- USA — 64 combined All-Star selections. Both reigning Cy Young winners (Skubal and Skenes). Aaron Judge as captain. Bobby Witt Jr., Bryce Harper, Cal Raleigh, Gunnar Henderson. The bullpen — Mason Miller, David Bednar, Garrett Whitlock — throws pure gas. This is the most stacked American roster ever assembled for international play.
- Mexico — Randy Arozarena was the breakout star of WBC 2023 and nearly led Mexico past Japan in the semis. Jarren Duran, Alejandro Kirk (.316 All-Star in 2025) and closer Andres Munoz give Mexico a dangerous, well-balanced roster. They've been here before.
- Italy — The trendy upset pick, and for good reason. Aaron Nola headlines the pitching staff. Vinnie Pasquantino, Jac Caglianone and Kyle Teel provide legitimate MLB pop. Italy made the quarterfinals in 2023 and has beaten Mexico twice in WBC history (2013, 2017). Don't sleep on this team.
- Great Britain — Jazz Chisholm Jr. (30-30 season with the Yankees in 2025) is a legitimate star, and co-captain Harry Ford is a rising talent. But the pitching staff is thin. Great Britain can upset Italy in a single game but probably can't sustain it across four.
- Brazil — Making their first WBC appearance since 2013. The roster features sons of MLB legends (Dante Bichette Jr., Lucas Ramirez, 17-year-old Joseph Contreras) but lacks the MLB-caliber pitching to compete.
AI Prediction: USA and Mexico advance.
Italy is the popular upset pick over Mexico, and I get the appeal. But Mexico's WBC pedigree — semifinalists in 2023 — and the Arozarena/Duran/Munoz core give them a higher floor. Italy is one Nola gem away from flipping this, though.
Upset Alert: Italy vs. Mexico on March 11 is effectively a play-in game. If Nola pitches that day, Italy has a real shot.
Pool B Best Bet: Under the total in USA vs. Mexico (March 9). Skenes is scheduled to start for the USA. Mexico will counter with their best arm. Two elite pitching staffs, high-leverage atmosphere — this game plays tight. The WBC pitch count limits (65 pitches in pool play) force early bullpen usage, which favors low-scoring games when both teams have deep relief corps.
⚾ WBC Pool C predictions & preview (Tokyo)
Teams: Japan, South Korea, Australia, Chinese Taipei, Czechia
Japan's pool. The defending champs are 12-1 all-time at Tokyo Dome in WBC play. The real drama is the fight for second place.
AI Power Ranking:
- Japan — Shohei Ohtani (DH only, not pitching) anchors a lineup that outscored pool play opponents by 30 runs in 2023. Yoshinobu Yamamoto (2.49 ERA, 201 K, World Series MVP) is the clear ace. Seiya Suzuki adds 32-homer power from the Cubs. Munetaka Murakami and Kazuma Okamoto bring NPB-to-MLB star power. The pitching depth behind Yamamoto is the only question — no Sasaki, no Darvish, no Imanaga — but NPB arms Hiromi Itoh (Sawamura Award winner) and Hiroya Miyagi (2.39 ERA in NPB) are no jokes.
- South Korea — Do-yeong Kim (2024 KBO MVP) is the X-factor, but hamstring injuries limited him to 30 games in 2025. Jung Hoo Lee (Giants) provides MLB-caliber contact hitting. Pitching is the problem: 38-year-old Hyun-Jin Ryu leads the staff and the KBO arms behind him are unproven against elite competition. Korea hasn't advanced past pool play since their 2009 finals run.
- Chinese Taipei — Won the 2024 Premier12 gold medal. Yu Chang was the 2023 pool MVP despite his team not advancing (tiebreaker heartbreak). Young, talented roster with momentum. This is a legitimate threat to steal second place from Korea.
- Australia — Upset Korea in 2023, made the QFs for the first time. Travis Bazzana (2024 No. 1 overall draft pick) and Curtis Mead boost the lineup. But pitching remains a glaring weakness with almost no MLB-quality arms.
- Czechia — The lovable underdogs of 2023 are back, but replacing China with Chinese Taipei in this pool makes advancing nearly impossible. Ondrej Satoria — the man who struck out against Ohtani in a viral moment — pitches in his final tournament.
AI Prediction: Japan and South Korea advance.
Chinese Taipei is the value dark horse here, but Korea's lineup is deeper and the March 7 Korea-Chinese Taipei head-to-head could be the decisive tiebreaker game.
Upset Alert: Chinese Taipei vs. South Korea on March 7 (10 p.m. ET). If Taipei pulls this off, Pool C gets chaotic.
Pool C Best Bet: Japan to win Pool C at whatever price is posted. They're essentially unbeatable at Tokyo Dome in this format. The real value play is to look for Chinese Taipei's moneyline against South Korea — Taipei's Premier12 pedigree makes them live underdogs.
⚾ WBC Pool D predictions & preview (Miami)
Teams: Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Netherlands, Israel, Nicaragua
The heavyweight pool. The DR and Venezuela both have lineups that rival Team USA. Somebody's going home early.
AI Power Ranking:
- Dominican Republic — This lineup is obscene. Vlad Jr. (WBC debut, coming off a monster postseason), Juan Soto, Fernando Tatis Jr., Julio Rodriguez, Manny Machado, Ketel Marte, Jose Ramirez, Oneil Cruz. Manager Albert Pujols. Pitching is led by Cristopher Sanchez (Phillies lefty) and Sandy Alcantara, who gets to pitch at his home park (loanDepot). Carlos Estevez (AL saves leader) anchors the pen.
- Venezuela — Lost Pablo Lopez to a UCL injury, which hurts. But the lineup is still terrifying: Ronald Acuna Jr. (.935 OPS in his return from ACL surgery), Jackson Chourio, Salvador Perez, Luis Arraez, Maikel Garcia (5.6 fWAR breakout), Eugenio Suarez (49 HR in 2025). Ranger Suarez leads the rotation. Daniel Palencia (99.6 mph average fastball) is the closer.
- Netherlands — A historically competitive WBC team with a mix of MLB and European league talent. Capable of stealing a game, but the offensive firepower doesn't match the DR or Venezuela.
- Israel — Shocked the world by winning their pool in the 2017 WBC, but the 2023 showing was disappointing. Looking to play spoiler.
- Nicaragua — Making their second WBC appearance. Mark Vientos (Mets) is the lone MLB star. Managed by Dusty Baker, which is fun, but this roster is overmatched.
AI Prediction: Dominican Republic and Venezuela advance.
The March 11 DR vs. Venezuela matchup (8 p.m. ET) is the pool play game of the entire tournament. It likely decides who wins Pool D and who gets a tougher quarterfinal draw.
Upset Alert: Netherlands can steal a game from Venezuela if the pitching doesn't show up. Venezuela's rotation depth behind Ranger Suarez is the weakest link on an otherwise loaded team.
Pool D Best Bet: Dominican Republic to win Pool D. This lineup is built for a short tournament — power at every position, MLB experience throughout. At loanDepot Park, with Alcantara pitching at home, the DR has every edge.
🔮 WBC AI bracket predictions
Based on the pool predictions above, here's how the knockout round plays out:
Quarterfinals
Houston — March 13
- USA (Pool B winner) vs. Canada (Pool A runner-up) → USA wins. The talent gap is massive. Canada's pitching can't contain Judge, Witt Jr. and Raleigh.
- Puerto Rico (Pool A winner) vs. Mexico (Pool B runner-up) → Mexico wins. Without Lindor and Correa, Puerto Rico's offense is a tier below. Arozarena and Duran punish the PR bullpen in the later innings.
Miami — March 13-14
- Dominican Republic (Pool D winner) vs. South Korea (Pool C runner-up) → DR wins. Korea's KBO pitching staff gets steamrolled by the most dangerous lineup in the tournament.
- Japan (Pool C winner) vs. Venezuela (Pool D runner-up) → Japan wins in a tight one. Yamamoto gets the start and delivers a vintage performance. Venezuela's lineup makes it close, but Japan's discipline at the plate and bullpen management get them through.
Semifinals (Reseeded — Miami, March 15-16)
- USA vs. Dominican Republic → USA wins. This is the real final. The DR lineup can hang with anyone, but the American pitching depth — Skenes on the mound, Miller closing — is the deciding factor. USA wins a tense, low-scoring game.
- Japan vs. Mexico → Japan wins. Mexico's dream run ends here. Japan's lineup overpowers Mexico's starting pitching, and the NPB bullpen arms handle the late innings.
WBC Championship (Miami — March 17)
USA vs. Japan
The rematch everyone wants. Ohtani vs. Judge. The 2023 final in reverse.
AI Prediction: USA wins the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
The difference from 2023? Pitching. In that tournament, the USA trotted out Miles Mikolas, Lance Lynn and Adam Wainwright. Kyle Freeland gave up a critical homer in the title game. This time, the Americans have Skenes, Webb, McLean and a bullpen led by a 105-mph closer in Mason Miller. Japan's pitching depth — without Sasaki, Darvish and Imanaga — isn't the cheat code it was three years ago. Yamamoto is elite, but he can't start every game. The USA's rotation depth wins the war of attrition.
💰 Claude's WBC best bets
See the latest World Baseball Classic odds 2026 and our WBC best bets.
WBC outright winner: USA (-105, BetMGM)
Yes, it's chalky. No, I don't care. This is the most talented American roster in WBC history with a pitching staff that actually matches the lineup for once. The 2023 loss was a pitching problem. That problem is solved. The USA is the rightful favorite.
Best WBC long shot: Dominican Republic (+400, BetMGM)
At +400, the DR offers the best risk-reward in the tournament. The lineup is arguably better than Team USA's — Vlad Jr., Soto, Tatis Jr., J-Rod, Machado, Marte and Ramirez is an absurd collection of talent. If Cristopher Sanchez and the bullpen can hold up through four elimination games, this team can beat anyone. The 65-pitch limit in pool play actually helps the DR because it minimizes the starting pitching depth gap.
WBC team to fade: Japan (+330, BetMGM)
This will be controversial. Japan has won 3 of 5 WBCs and Ohtani is still the best player alive. But +330 doesn't offer enough value for a team that lost four of its five 2023 starters (Ohtani as pitcher, Sasaki, Darvish, Imanaga) and has real bullpen questions. The path from Pool C likely runs through the DR or Venezuela and then the USA. That's three consecutive games against elite MLB lineups with a pitching staff anchored by NPB arms behind Yamamoto. Japan's floor is high — they'll make the semis — but the ceiling is capped by pitching depth. There's better value elsewhere.
WBC MVP pick: Bobby Witt Jr. (+1600, BetMGM)
Witt plays every game, bats at the top of the USA lineup and has the kind of all-around game (speed, power, defense) that dominates short tournaments. Judge (+750) is the favorite, and he'll certainly mash, but Witt's ability to manufacture runs and make highlight-reel defensive plays gives him more paths to the award. Four of five WBC MVPs have gone to pitchers, but if the USA wins, the MVP is likely an American position player — and Witt's the most dynamic one on the roster.
🆚 Key matchups that could decide the World Baseball Classic
USA vs. Mexico (Pool B, March 9, 8 p.m. ET) — Paul Skenes gets the start for the USA. This game likely decides who wins Pool B and gets the easier quarterfinal draw. Mexico took Japan to the brink in the 2023 semis. If Arozarena and Duran get to the American bullpen early, anything can happen.
Dominican Republic vs. Venezuela (Pool D, March 11, 8 p.m. ET) — The most talented pool play game in WBC history. Both lineups are loaded with MVP candidates and All-Stars. Winner likely takes Pool D and avoids Japan in the quarters. Loser gets the defending champs. This is a de facto elimination game disguised as pool play.
Japan vs. South Korea (Pool C, March 7, 5 a.m. ET) — The oldest rivalry in international baseball. Japan has dominated recently, but Korea's lineup — if Do-yeong Kim is healthy — has the ceiling to keep it close. A Korea upset would send Pool C into chaos and potentially alter the entire bracket.
Skenes vs. Yamamoto (potential semifinal or final) — If the bracket holds, these two could face off with the WBC on the line. The 23-year-old NL Cy Young winner vs. the World Series MVP. This would be the signature moment of the 2026 WBC.
