Royals vs. Tigers Win Probability: Who Will Win Today’s MLB Game? (July 23)
There's a gargantuan favorite in the Royals vs. Tigers win probability from the prediction market apps, and it isn't the team that's been floundering all season and is now missing a megastar.
The latter is the Royals, and their issues are about to become even deeper now with Bobby Witt Jr. sidelined. The Tigers have often been limping along too and performing below expectations, but they boast a massive 67% win probability tonight, largely due to Kansas City's offensive woes.
That sputtering makes the first inning runs market appealing, especially given the recent form of Tigers starter Troy Melton.

There was a colossal gap when this market opened, and it's now shrunk to a still huge 67% win probability for the Tigers.
Detroit has been enduring plenty of its own issues, which is why the Tigers are possibly on the cusp of selling and dealing away Tarik Skubal. But although they've won five of their last six games, the Royals' woes still run deep.
That's especially true with Witt now out. Life without him at least short-term, is just beginning for a team already 17 games below .500. Removing Witt means somehow living without a slugger who sits in the 94th percentile or above in expected batting average, expected slugging percentage, and average exit velocity.
There's also the uncertainty tied to tonight's Royals starter Randy Dobnak, who's making just his second start of the season. His sweeper, the righty's second most-used pitch, has been hammered to the tune of a .915 OPS allowed, according to Baseball Reference.
My prediction: Tigers win. When Dobnak departs, which will likely happen early, he'll hand the ball to the league's 29th-ranked bullpen with an ERA of 5.38.

Only Vinnie Pasquantino is listed in this market, no doubt in part due to the uncertainty tied to both starting pitchers and how long they may last in this game. Melton and Dobnak have combined to make 10 starts this season, nine of which have come from the former.
This campaign has been filled with immense struggles for Pasquantino, whose OPS has fallen from .798 last year to .661 now. But the main element he has going for him tonight is simply the side of the plate Pasquantino bats from.
Melton has been effective overall, and as always a gap is expected between his performance against righties versus lefties. But this one is a chasm, with the righty giving up a .472 OPS to righties and a .622 to lefties.

This market has generally been hovering around 48% or 49%, with a few brief jumps up to a 50% chance of a first-inning run.
The immense scuffling of both offenses makes it hard to trust either team here, despite pitching issues for Kansas City. The Royals and Tigers rank 20th and 21st in run production, respectively, and the former is now without Witt, the only consistent spark on a team otherwise desperate for power. Pasquantino is at the forefront of that, with his hard-hit rate that's fallen from 44.7% last year to 39.6% now.
Toss in the likes of Zack McKinstry (20.6% hard-hit rate) and Matt Vierling (36.8) also struggling for Detroit, and scoring in any inning could be a challenge.
