Former Boston Red Sox shortstop Yu Chang shined during the 2023 WBC, and I expect him to be a major factor with my Chinese Taipei vs. Australia predictions.

The 2026 World Baseball Classic gets underway tonight when Chinese Taipei and Australia open the action. Our Chinese Taipei vs. Australia predictions head to DraftKings, where Chinese Taipei serves as a significant betting favorite.

The first game of the tournament gets underway at 10 p.m. ET tonight from Tokyo Dome in Japan, and you can head to our WBC 2026 expert picks for your official tournament hub.

Our moneyline pick won't be the most exciting (spoiler: I'm backing the favorite), but can I interest you in multiple hitting props, including one of the stars of the 2023 WBC to hit a home run? Tonight's pitching matchup is Jo Hsi Hsu vs. Alex Wells, and I'm betting on one of them to get lit up.

💰 Chinese Taipei vs. Australia best bet

Under 11.5 (-120)

I think some of the present and former MLB players shine in this game, but overall, I believe the bright lights of the WBC tournament opener will get the best of a lot of these hitters.

I'm particularly fading Australia's lineup against Chinese Taipei's Jo Hsi Hsu, who's a quality pitcher. He had a 2.05 ERA in the Chinese Professional Baseball League last season, and he pitched to a 2.45 ERA in two WBC qualifier games.

I see this ending with around nine or 10 runs.

🔥 Best Chinese Taipei vs. Australia player prop

Stuart Fairchild 2+ hits (+130)

Stuart Fairchild isn't anything special when it comes to facing other major-league pitchers, but he should fare much better in this environment. The Cleveland Guardians outfielder hit .286 across three spring training games before flying to Japan, and I think he picks up where he left off.

Speaking of "left" off, Australia's starting pitcher Alex Wells is a southpaw. For his career, Fairchild is slashing just .203/.269/.366 against righties. However, in more than 300 plate appearances against left-handed pitchers, Fairchild owns a much more respectable .246/.343/.404 slash line and a wRC+ of 106.

That means Fairchild is an above-average hitter against major-league lefties. Think about what he'll do against Wells.

💣 Chinese Taipei vs. Australia home run prediction

Yu Chang (+380)

Yu Chang is an absolute monster when he's playing for his country. In the 2023 WBC, he hit .438 with four extra-base hits over four games, and he went 7-for-18 with five more extra-base hits when Chinese Taipei played in last year's WBC qualifying games.

Chang last played in the majors for the Boston Red Sox, for whom he hit six home runs across 39 games. That's already pretty good. Now, what if I told you he crushed 14 bombs in only 65 CPBL games last year? He owned a .917 OPS last season after managing a .985 mark the year prior.

MLB fans may not realize just how dangerous Chang is in this setting.

🚀 Chinese Taipei vs. Australia same-game parlay

I'm combining our four bets for this game into one SGP to really get the juices flowing for this opening game of the 2026 WBC.

💵 Best Chinese Taipei vs. Australia parlay bet

  • Chinese Taipei ML (-225)
  • Under 11.5 (-120)
  • Fairchild 2+ hits (+130)
  • Chang HR (+380)

Best odds: +3300 via DraftKings (0.1u -> 3.4u)

⚖️ How I'm betting Chinese Taipei vs. Australia

I don't blame anyone for ignoring this game completely. It's the first of the tournament and there are a lot of unknowns, figuratively and literally when it comes to the players involved. Personally, I'll probably throw money only on Chang to hit a home run. It may not be the best bet but it's the most exciting and I can limit my stake to 0.33 units and call it a day. A bit of bankroll management, really.

If you want to get more involved, I see nothing wrong with putting a full unit on Fairchild to record two-plus hits and the game to go Under 11.5. You can probably leave the moneyline alone because it's so short, and no one really needs that much action on the WBC opener, but if you want to bet into those -225 odds, I won't stop you.

📊 Chinese Taipei vs. Australia odds & analysis

Here are the World Baseball Classic odds for Chinese Taipei vs. Australia on Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET; odds via DraftKings:

Market Chinese Taipei Australia
Moneyline -225 +180
Run line -2.5 (-105) +2.5 (-115)
Over/Under Over 11.5 (-105) Under 11.5 (-120)

Because this is the first game of the tournament, odds came out relatively late. However, we see that Chinese Taipei is a significant favorite to win this contest, which mimics the fact that DraftKings also has it priced at +175 to qualify from Pool C vs. Australia's +275 odds.

🆚 Chinese Taipei vs. Australia starting pitchers

Here are the projected starting pitchers for Wednesday's Chinese Taipei vs. Australia matchup:

Position Chinese Taipei Australia
Starting pitcher Jo Hsi Hsu Alex Wells

Key players to watch

Chinese Taipei - Yu Chang: I talked about Chang above and how incredible he was during the 2023 WBC and the 2025 qualifiers. He's the player to watch as long as Chinese Taipei are in this tournament.

Australia - Curtis Mead: Mead plays for the Chicago White Sox and already swatted one home run during spring training. If anyone can get ahold of one in this game against the Chinese Taipei pitchers, it might be him.
