The first game of Saturday’s loaded 15-game slate starts with this early 1:10 p.m. ET first pitch from Comerica Park in Detroit (ESPN Unlimited) as St. Louis’ Dustin May opposes Detroit’s Jack Flaherty. The Tigers are the -160 betting favorites.

My Cardinals vs. Tigers prediction expects a high-scoring game as the two opposing starting pitchers each struggled in their debuts. This interleague matchup also features two of the favorites to win their respective league’s Rookie of the Year Awards (JJ Wetherholt and Kevin McGonigle), and one of them is the focus of my player prop today.

🏆 Who will win Cardinals vs. Tigers?

I am not yet panicking on a Tigers team that is projected to win the AL Central after being shut out in two of its four losses. Detroit was the only team in the division to be 11 games over .500 at home last season, and I expect it to continue getting right at Comerica Park after a tough six-game West Coast road trip and yesterday's shutout victory.

Score prediction: Tigers 5, Cardinals 4

💰 Cardinals vs. Tigers prediction & best bet

Over 7.5 (-102)

Jack Flaherty spent his first six full seasons with the Cardinals, and allowed just two hits over six scoreless innings when facing his former teammates for the first time in 2024.

Flaherty has since regressed significantly, infamously leading the league with 15 losses last year. A lack of control led to his WHIP increasing from 1.068 in 2024 to 1.280.

Flaherty’s four walks issued in his debut are not inspiring, and St. Louis was lucky to allow just five runs in a three-game series against the Mets, after New York went 1-for-29 with runners in scoring position.

📡 SBR Edge: Interleague Overs

The Over cashed in 61.7% of Detroit's interleague games (29-18-1) and 64.4% of St. Louis' interleague games (29-16-3) last season.

🔥 Best Cardinals vs. Tigers player prop bet

Kevin McGonigle Over 1.5 hits + runs + RBIs (-118)

Kevin McGonigle made a splash right out of the gate for the Tigers, producing four hits and two doubles in his MLB debut. He followed that up with the go-ahead hit the next night, and has since been rewarded with a rise from the No. 6 to the No. 2 spot in Detroit’s lineup (he even batted leadoff yesterday).

McGonigle is already showing why he is the team’s No. 1 prospect, as he has a .346 and .645 batting average and xSLG, along with an elite 15.8% barrel rate.

Meanwhile, Dustin May is coming off a season where he produced the worst xBA, xSLG, xERA, and wOBA of his career. McGonigle entered the series with 10 total bases in 18 at-bats against right-handed pitchers, and he should stuff the stat sheet today.

💣 Cardinals vs. Tigers home run prediction

Riley Greene to hit a home run (+500)

Neither May nor Flaherty allowed a home run in their debuts, but the Cardinals righty did give up a whopping 10 hits, and is coming off a season where he allowed 1.4 home runs per nine innings

May’s 55.6% hard-hit rate and 0.42 ground ball to fly ball ratio in his first start suggest there is great value to back a Tigers hitter to go yard, especially since 38.9% of the batted balls against the righty were line drives.

Riley Greene had a team-leading 32 home runs against righties last season, and these are great odds for him to produce his first long ball.

🚀 Cardinals vs. Tigers same-game parlay

I'm all in on the Tigers offense with this three-leg same-game parlay, which means the best chance of this cashing is for them to go Over their projected team total of 3.5 runs. A Greene home run that plates McGonigle would cash two of these legs (assuming McGonigle reached base via a hit), and St. Louis has a great chance to do its part in the scoring against a regressing Flaherty.

💵 Cardinals vs. Tigers SGP picks

  • Over 7.5 (-105)
  • Kevin McGonigle to record 2+ hits + runs + RBIs (-115)
  • Riley Greene to hit a home run (+500)

Best odds: +2090 via bet365 (.1u -> 2.09u)

💡 How I'm betting Cardinals vs. Tigers: MLB strategy

Follow all of our MLB analysis and expert predictions for baseball season.

Had Detroit been a -150 or shorter moneyline favorite, I would have opted to bet it to win outright instead of making the total my favorite play. But with its moneyline odds up to -170 (carrying a 62.96% implied probability), I opted for the better value on the Over, figuring weather wouldn't be as much of a factor in this early-afternoon tilt.

I'd like McGonigle's chances of going Over 1.5 hits/runs/RBIs more if he was again batting leadoff or in the No. 2 hole, and I would drop this to a half-unit wager if I learned he was surprisingly moved down in the batting order.

📊 Live Cardinals vs. Tigers odds

BetMGM has the steepest moneyline odds for Detroit (-170), and got there after opening at -160. The Tigers have gotten 71% of the early wagers thus far, making them one of the more popular favorites in the afternoon window.

Caesars was the only top sports betting site to increase its total from 7.5 to 8.0 at any point, while DraftKings quickly aligned with the rest of the market at 7.5 after opening the highest of all at 8.0. The fact that the Under of 7.5 is juiced to -115 or higher at our best sports betting sites suggests we're more likely to see the line move to 7.0 instead of returning to 8.0 at any point before first pitch.
