The Sentry Picks & Odds 2024: Kim Poised to Start Breakthrough Season

The new-look 2024 PGA Tour schedule begins this week in Hawaii and we're looking at the PGA Tour odds from our best golf betting sites for our top 2024 Sentry picks.

There is a 59-man field at the Plantation Course at Kapalua in Maui, HI competing in the PGA Tour's first signature event of the year. Defending champion Jon Rahm is not among the contingent after departing for LIV Golf, leaving a $20 million purse and 700 FedEx Cup points up for grabs.

Scottie Scheffler is the consensus betting favorite by The Sentry odds with Rahm removed from competition. Outside of Rahm, Rory McIlroy - No. 2 in the Official World Golf Ranking - is the most notable absentee this week.

Thirty-five golfers in this field are in via PGA Tour wins last year - the other 24 qualified by finishing in the top 50 of last season's FedEx Cup standings.

Next week's Sony Open in Hawaii will feature the first full-field event of the season.

Tom Kim to win (+2500 via BetMGM)

Tom Kim, 21, has already shown a penchant for courses where he's previously had success in his young PGA Tour career, including his back-to-back wins in the Shriners Children's Open at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. He returns for his second go-around of The Sentry after a strong T-5 debut last January.

Kim was one of the few members of last year's field to lose strokes on the greens but he still finished at 22-under par while leaning on elite iron play that included a field-best 1.70 true strokes gained from tee-to-green per round.

The South Korean sensation enters the 2024 event third in this field in driving accuracy across everyone's last 16 measured rounds. He's also near the top of the field in SG: approach, and he has gained 0.76 strokes per round with his putter over that span. Additionally, Kim ranked 18th on the PGA Tour last season in birdie-or-better percentage from this week's key range of 200-plus yards.

Despite the sheer length of the Plantation Course at Kapalua (7,596 yards), Kim won't be penalized for his slightly shorter driving distance. There are many other ways to gain yards at Kapalua, and Kim's elite iron play is my top target this week while hoping he can continue the excellent play with his putter of late last season.

We've lost a little bit of value on our Kim outright ticket, after we initially recommended this pick at +2800 odds via Caesars. His odds even reached a market-high of +3000 earlier in the week.

The Sentry field notes

The PGA Tour schedule opens with a bang, with The Sentry gaining signature event status. As such, the field is up to 59 competitors for the $20 million purse from a previous standard of 39.

For the second straight year, the defending champion of this event bolted for LIV Golf. Cameron Smith won the 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions before his departure. Rahm won last year's event at Kapalua as the first of his four victories from January to April, culminating with the Masters.

To help increase the number of competitors in the field, the Sentry Tournament of Champions has been renamed The Sentry and is allowing an additional 24 entrants based on their finish in last year's FedEx Cup standings. Viktor Hovland, who won the 2023 FedEx Cup and enters this event at No. 4 in the OWGR, has the second-shortest odds to win this week.
