🐾 Washington State +21 (-112) ⭐⭐⭐

Neither Washington State nor Washington has impressed me this year. Wazzu is coming off a 49-point loss to North Texas. Washington is coming off a 60-point beat down of FCS UC Davis but only beat Colorado State by 17 in the home opener, failing to cover the 22.5-point spread. With a massive rivalry game on tap and Washington State hosting, it’s hard to turn down the generous 21 points we can buy at DraftKings.

Twenty-one-point wins are uncommon in recent Apple Cup history. Washington State scored the most recent one in 2021. Washington’s biggest recent win in the series was a 27-point drubbing in 2016. While conference politics and the transfer portal have forever altered this series, I give some weight to the motivation with which Washington State will enter this game, especially with a successful former FCS coach in Jimmy Rogers at the helm.

Both the Fremeau Efficiency Index and Sagarin have this game projected within a 14-point margin. While the data those models use relies heavily on last year’s performance, which may not be as predictive for a heavily retooled Wazzu squad, I trust their assessment of this one. I just haven’t seen enough from Washington against FBS teams to trust them to cover a massive spread on the road, especially with quarterback Demond Williams Jr. having just one career road start – a blowout loss to Oregon – under his belt.

Back Wazzu to cover the +21 for -112 (52.8%) at Fanatics to score an $8.93 profit on a $10 bet.

⬇️ Jonah Coleman Under 107.5 rushing yards (-114) ⭐⭐⭐

No one has been able to stop Washington running back Jonah Coleman. He exploded for 177 rushing yards against Colorado State and another 111 against FCS UC Davis, scoring seven touchdowns in the process. That’s impressive, but it’s probably unsustainable. Coleman, who followed head coach Jedd Fisch from Arizona to Washington, cleared this line just twice last season and just four times in his career.

The Wazzu defense should put up at least some resistance. The team ranks 72nd in yards allowed per rush attempt (4.2), which isn’t great, but it’s more respectable than 119th-ranked Colorado State (5.5). Washington State’s run defense looked good in the win over San Diego State, too, allowing just 82 yards on the ground. It helps that the pass defense is shaky, as it surrendered four scores to North Texas last week, so don’t be surprised if Fisch trusts his quarterback to air it in this spot.

Ultimately, too much needs to go right for Coleman for him to clear the lofty total of 107.5 rushing yards. Bet on him to stay Under this number for -114 (53.3%) at Caesars to turn an $8.77 profit on a $10 bet.

🔍 Washington vs. Washington State odds analysis

The Apple Cup betting odds have moved substantially from where they opened. Washington was originally available at -11.5, but that number has since ticked up to -19.5 or -20.5, depending on your book of choice, largely because of how underwhelming Washington State has looked. I think this puts a bit too much faith in Washington, so look for this spread to close below 20.

The total for this game has also moved, ticking up from 49.5 to 52.5, crossing the key number of 51 in the process. I haven’t seen much of note from either defense, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see this total close slightly higher.

How do college football odds work?

When betting on college football, the point spread shows how many points the favorite needs to win by in order to cash the bet. For example, a favorite of -3 must win by more than 3 points to cover the spread, while an underdog at +3 must win outright or lose by fewer than 3 points to cover the spread.

Moneyline odds represent the payout for picking the outright winner (+200 means a $100 bet wins $200, while -200 means a $200 bet wins $100). Over/Unders let you wager on whether the combined total will be higher or lower than the set number.
