South Carolina won its final six games of the regular season last year, beating three ranked teams in the process. It quickly realized that keeping the ball in its best playmaker’s hands, quarterback LaNorris Sellers, makes it a successful offensive team. 

Sellers threw for 238 or more yards in four of those final six regular-season games. And in one that he finished with fewer than 200 passing yards in that span, the team did not need to air it out much in a convincing 26-point win over Oklahoma.

There are more question marks in Virginia Tech’s secondary than there are in its defensive line, which boasts five transfers with five-plus tackles for loss last year, so I expect Sellers to air it out early and often.

Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones was limited to just nine games last year due to injury. But when he was healthy, he was utilized a ton in the running game, with eight or more rushing attempts in every game, and 40 or more rushing yards on four occasions. 

But Drones is now playing under new offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery, whose Tulsa teams relied more on running backs in the running game. South Carolina’s defense lost nearly its entire front six, with Dylan Stewart and his 6.5 sacks the only proven pass rusher back. While that negates the potential for negative rushing yards for Drones via sacks, it also will not make him scramble-happy if he isn’t constantly under duress.
