Texas Tech vs. Utah Prediction, Odds & Picks: Under Plays Rule the Day

My best Texas Tech vs. Utah prediction goes against the grain to feature a pair of Under plays from two of the nation's highest-scoring teams.

I make my best Texas Tech vs. Utah prediction for Saturday’s noon ET (FOX) game at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. The Utes are the 3-point home betting favorite.

The total for this game is set at 56.5, and considering the Red Raiders are the highest-scoring team in the nation, I expect the Over to be one of the most popular college football picks. However, I’m going against the public for one of my best college football predictions for Week 4. And I explain why Cameron Dickey is in for a long day.

🏈 Texas Tech vs. Utah prediction to win

College football expert picks for Saturday; odds subject to change.

  • Moneyline pick: Utah (-152 via FanDuel) ⭐⭐⭐
  • Against the spread pick: Texas Tech +3 (-105 via Caesars) ⭐⭐⭐
  • Over/Under pick: Under 56.5 (-105 via BetMGM) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

⬇️  Under 56.5 (-105) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A majority (60%) of the public is on the Over, but I love the Under in this game. Both teams are averaging over 45 points per game, but neither has played a worthy opponent yet.

The Utes have yet to allow more than eight points in a game. While Behren Morton and company will score more than that, they’re going to set a season-low against a defense that allowed just 20.7 points per game last season. I’m less confident in Texas Tech’s defense, but I also think Utah quarterback Devon Dampier will look more average against a better defense, just like we saw when he threw for fewer than 200 yards in six of his 12 games last year.

The price of -105 at BetMGM suggests a 51.22% chance the Under hits. A $10 bet would pay $9.52

⬇️  Cameron Dickey Under 64.5 rushing yards (-115) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is a five-star play because bet365 is offering this total at 12 yards more than any of the other best sports betting sites. Considering they’re offering almost the identical price to FanDuel, which has this number set at 50.5, it’s not hard to see the value here.

Dickey has rushed for at least 65 yards in two games, so it’s not surprising to see his number where it is. However, against significantly inferior competition, he is averaging just 4.5 yards per carry, and against Kent State, he ran the ball eight times for just 10 yards.

The Utes enter this game allowing just 90.0 rushing yards per contest. Since the Red Raiders are a pass-first team, I don’t expect Dickey to break through against them. The price of -115 suggests a 53.49% chance this Under hits. A $10 bet would pay $8.70.

🔍 Texas Tech vs. Utah odds analysis

There hasn’t been any significant movement in the odds for this game.

The total opened at 55.5, and it has since climbed to 56.5. With 60% of the public backing the Over, you’d expect the number to be a little higher, but oddsmakers seem happy with the action they’re seeing. The spread has been sitting at 3 or 3.5 at all of the best sports betting apps all week, and with the public split on this game, I would be shocked if the spread dipped to 2.5 before kickoff.

How do college football odds work?

When betting on college football, the point spread shows how many points the favorite needs to win by in order to cash the bet. For example, a favorite of -3 must win by more than 3 points to cover the spread, while an underdog at +3 must win outright or lose by fewer than 3 points to cover the spread.

Moneyline odds represent the payout for picking the outright winner (+200 means a $100 bet wins $200, while -200 means a $200 bet wins $100). Over/Unders let you wager on whether the combined total will be higher or lower than the set number.
