Some of college football's biggest stars will take center stage in Saturday's Senior Bowl, and we offer our 2024 Senior Bowl preview with picks and predictions based on the best college football odds.

For 73 years, the Senior Bowl has served as the premier all-star game in college football, even with various changes in team names. As of late, the National team has beaten the American team in three straight contests.

Five of the last seven Senior Bowls have been decided by double digits - most recently with the National team scoring a 27-10 win behind former Fresno State QB Jake Haener, who won MVP honors before being drafted by the New Orleans Saints.

Here are our best 2024 Senior Bowl predictions and picks, and our college football picks (odds via our best college football betting sites; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

Senior Bowl picks: Team National vs. Team American

National -2.5 ⭐⭐⭐

Best odds: -110 via FanDuel

Editor's note: this article was written before news that QB Michael Penix Jr. would not play.

Team National has outscored Team American 47-20 over the last two years and is 3-0 with a 74-44 combined margin of victory in the three wins since switching to this format.

This year, Team National's quarterback room is eye-popping, with Notre Dame's Sam Hartman, Washington's Michael Penix Jr., and Oregon's Bo Nix splitting reps. Having two of the top three Heisman vote-getters seems unfair. We expect their experience, combined with Hartman's skills (he entered this year as one of seven quarterbacks to throw for 3,500 yards and 35 touchdowns a year ago), to make all the difference.

Hartman also threw for an ACC record 110 touchdowns in five seasons at Wake Forest before transferring to Notre Dame, and he and the rest of Team National's quarterbacks have plenty of weapons, like Georgia wideout Ladd McConkey and a pair of All-ACC wide receivers in Florida State's Johnny Wilson and Louisville's Jamari Thrash.

NFL draft scout Ian Valentino provided his analysis on what he had seen from the first day of Senior Bowl practice, and seven of his eight standouts hailed from Team National.

It is difficult for offenses to gel quickly, given their lack of familiarity with one another. Still, Team American has a nightmare defensively to prepare for Penix, Nix, and Hartman, who all possess different skill sets, from elite running ability to outstanding touch and accuracy on deep balls.

Team American’s four quarterbacks (Spencer Rattler, Joe Milton, Michael Pratt, and Carter Bradley) may have more to gain and motivation to stand out from a draft perspective. Still, Team National’s quarterbacks' level of success this year gives them the nod.

Senior Bowl preview

The Senior Bowl is widely considered the flagship All-Star Game in college football and is one of the first events to formally kick off the NFL Draft process, as more than 900 personnel representing all NFL teams will be in attendance. All those playing have completed their college eligibility, and many will hear their names called in the NFL Draft, as 100 or more eventual draft picks have appeared in this game for three consecutive years.

Team National is coached by New York Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, while Tennessee Titans assistant head coach/defensive line coach Terrell Williams heads Team American. Players on each side get to prepare in a week’s worth of practice, headed by various NFL coaches.

Last year, 40 players from the Senior Bowl were selected in the first two days of the NFL Draft. This year, five of Mel Kiper’s top nine quarterbacks (Penix, Nix, Rattler, Pratt, Milton) and five of his top 10 offensive linemen (Taliese Fuaga-Oregon State, Tyler Guyton-Oklahoma, Jordan Morgan- Arizona, Kingsley Suamataia- BYU, and Patrick Paul- Houston) are all playing in the Senior Bowl.
