My Rice vs. Charlotte player prop picks, as part of our college football predictions for Week 4, are built around a low-scoring game in tonight’s American Conference showdown at Jerry Richardson Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN).

Rice enters as the consensus 2.5-point betting favorite, with the total sitting as low as 43.5. That modest number sets the tone for my college football picks, which reflect the expected defensive grind.

⬆️ Rod Gainey Jr. Over 42.5 rushing yards (-114) ⭐⭐⭐

Rice’s defense has surrendered more than 450 rushing yards in just three games - two of which were against Louisiana and Prairie View. The only time the Owls faced a quality opponent, Houston’s Dean Connors rumbled for 132 yards on just 13 carries.

So I’m betting on Charlotte (92.7 rushing yards per contest) to finally get its ground game going Thursday night - and I’m banking on Rod Gainey Jr. to lead the way. Although the redshirt freshman splits the backfield work with CJ Stokes, Gainey has racked up nearly as many yards (94 yards compared to 96 for Stokes) on nine fewer carries.

Last week against Monmouth, Gainey (15 carries, 74 yards) outworked and outgained Stokes (13 carries, 47 yards). Expect a similar outcome against Rice. FanDuel offers this prop at -114 odds, which equates to a 53.27% win probability. A winning $10 bet pays $8.77.

⬇️ Chase Jenkins Under 91.5 passing yards (-115) ⭐⭐⭐

Nope, it’s not a typo. I’m taking Rice quarterback Chris Jenkins to throw for fewer than 92 yards against a Charlotte secondary that allowed Monmouth’s quarterback to pass for 410 yards (and four TDs) last week. A secondary that’s yielding 323 passing yards per contest, which ranks 133rd out of 134 FBS teams.

My rationale for this play? Rice simply doesn’t throw the football. The Owls are averaging 70 air yards per game, which also ranks 133rd out of 134 FBS teams. Through three games, Jenkins has nearly as many rushing yards (144) as passing yards (182). His combined passing total against the two FBS opponents Rice has faced: 20 yards.

This wager is priced at -115 at bet365 and carries an implied win probability of 53.49%. Your profit on a successful $10 bet is $8.70.

⬇️ Conner Harrell Under 200.5 passing yards (-114) ⭐⭐

Best Rice vs. Charlotte Player Prop Bets: College Football Week 4 Odds & Expert Picks

Conner Harrell is coming off a career-best performance in which he threw for 382 yards and three touchdowns. Alas, he did it against an FCS outfit (Monmouth). Harrell’s passing total in his first two games against Appalachian State and North Carolina: 142 yards and 140 yards, respectively.

Coincidentally, Harrell’s high-water passing mark prior to last week was 219, which the North Carolina transfer logged last September against his current team. Harrell’s a decent quarterback, but this week he’s facing a Rice unit that is 24th nationally in defending the pass (142.3 yards per game). Of the three QBs the Owls have faced so far, Houston’s Conner Weigman has tallied the most yards, and he only got to 188.

FanDuel has the best number and best price (-114) on this prop. The implied win probability is 53.27%, with a $10 stake potentially yielding $8.77.

How do college football player props work?

Player props are wagers on individual performances rather than the outcome of the game. Common props include passing yards, rushing yards, receiving yards, and touchdown scorers. For example, if a QB’s passing yards line is set at 250.5, you can bet the Over (251-plus yards) or Under (250 or fewer yards). You can also bet on if a specific player will score a touchdown in the entire game, the first or last touchdown, and more college football odds markets.
