The most unconventional bowl game of bowl season is a rematch from the regular season in which Georgia Southern won by two on the road. In a neutral location with App State expected to be without its top two QBs, as well as several other starters, the Eagles are poised to win by more than a touchdown.
🤬 Deeper than Hate
Due to a lack of bowl-eligible teams and several programs with 5-7 records declining to play in the Birmingham Bowl, Appalachian State is here. What makes it so interesting is that the Mountaineers hail from the Sun Belt, the same conference as Georgia Southern.
Not only is this the rare intraconference bowl game, but these two programs go back even further than their Sun Belt days. Georgia Southern and Appalachian State have been hated rivals for nearly 100 years.
The first meeting of the Deeper Than Hate rivalry was in 1932, and App State leads the series with a 21-18-1 record. This is the first time the rivalry is being played outside of Statesboro, Ga., or Boone, N.C.
The Mountaineers have the worst defense in bowl season (ranked No. 118 by SP+), and veteran Georgia Southern QB JC French IV is capable of dicing it up.
