With our BYU vs. Texas Tech prediction for the Big 12 Championship, we’re targeting the potent Red Raider offense to continue its reign of terror as we expect No. 4 Texas Tech to handle No. 11 BYU for the second time.
With the CFP committee essentially spelling it out that BYU must win an automatic bid to qualify for the playoff, the Cougars dream season could come to a disappointing conclusion deep in the heart of Texas.
The action for BYU vs. Texas Tech kicks off from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Saturday at noon ET (ABC). Texas Tech is a 12.5-point betting favorite as part of our championship weekend predictions.

Under 49.5 (-110) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Though BYU’s offense has put up explosive performances throughout the season, it fell flat in its first meeting with Texas Tech. The Cougars scored just 7 points in a 29-7 road loss.
The rematch doesn’t come on campus in Lubbock, but the Red Raiders should still be plenty comfortable in their home state.
Elsewhere, our Mike Spector is going with Bahren Morton to go Under his passing touchdowns prop in his college football best bets.
Tech is still an electric factory, just not for Over bettors
With an offense that averages 41.0 points per game (5th in FBS), you would expect Texas games to have been a haven for Over bettors this season. But the Red Raiders have seen just five of their 12 games hit the Over because their second-ranked scoring defense in the nation, allowing just 11.6 PPG, has completely stifled opposing offenses.
BYU averages 30.8 PPG, but the lone time it faced an opponent with a top-20 adjusted defensive efficiency, it mustered just one touchdown—that loss against Texas Tech, whose AdjD ranks No. 1 in the nation.
The Cougars are good, but not great offensively. That distinction bears out when it faces legitimate competition. Texas Tech should once again limit the Bear Bachmeier-led unit in a game that sees BYU muster a bit more fight in the rematch, but not enough to change the result.
BetMGM offers Under 49.5 with -110 odds. That equates to an implied probability of 52.38%. A winning $10 bet would profit $9.09.
Score prediction: Texas Tech 31, BYU 17

Bear Bachmeier vs. Texas Tech run defense
BYU QB Bear Bachmeier is a threat on the ground, running for 32+ yards in eight of 12 games this season. But against Texas Tech, he secured just 12 yards on 11 rushing attempts.
The Red Raiders rank as the best run defense in the country, allowing just 71.1 rushing yards per game.
Texas Tech’s defense is also tied for 6th in FBS in sacks per game (3.0). If the Red Raiders can bring Bachmeier down in the backfield on a few passing plays, that would contribute negatively to his rushing total.
Best prop bet: Bear Bachmeier Under 31.5 rushing yards (-114 via FanDuel)
