The last game on Saturday’s college football slate involving an AP top 25 team is this Big 12 tilt between Arizona State and Utah, which kicks off at 10:15 p.m. ET from Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah (ESPN). My Arizona State vs. Utah prediction and college football picks avoid the bait and back the unranked home favorites against the ranked road ‘dogs.

Since I expect Utah to cover as the 7.5-point betting favorite, I'm expecting a big day through the air for quarterback Devon Dampier to round out my college football predictions for Week 7.

🆚 Who will win Arizona State vs. Utah?

Both Arizona State and Utah are rested coming off bye weeks for this matchup, but the Utes have been slightly better in that split in recent years. Utah is 3-3 since 2021 when coming off a bye week, while the Sun Devils have lost four of their last six games following a bye in that same time span.

Utah has also won each of its last three home games against Arizona State, and four of five overall in this series.

Prediction: Utah 30, Arizona State 17

🔴 Utah -7.5 (-115) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Utah had every reason to be in a letdown spot in its last game against West Virginia, traveling across the country as a 12.5-point betting favorite off a deflating 34-10 home loss to Texas Tech. But that 24-point loss to the Red Raiders likely said more about Texas Tech than Utah, as the Utes took care of business with an easy cover in a 34-point win.

Despite dealing with some injuries on the defensive line and in the secondary against the Mountaineers, Utah still held West Virginia to 85 yards passing and had 19 more first downs.

Utah’s 33 first downs were impressive considering West Virginia entered that game ranked in the top-30 defensively in EPA per pass and average late down distance. The Utes converted all eight of their third-down opportunities in the first half, and now rank second nationally with a 61% third-down conversion percentage.

The rightful favorite in this matchup is the unranked team against the ranked squad, as Utah is in the top 20 nationally in both scoring offense and defense. Arizona State has been playing with fire with three of its last four games decided by four or fewer points, and the more talented team should win by a more comfortable margin this weekend.

Utah is -8.5 at a similar price at some of our best college football betting sites, so I'm getting a better play with FanDuel's spread of -7.5, which implies a 53.49% probability the Utes will cover and pays an $8.70 profit on a $10 bet.

🤕 Sam Leavitt doubtful for Arizona State

Utah opened as a 5.5-point betting favorite at home, but ESPN's Pete Thamel reported Thursday night that Arizona State QB Sam Leavitt has been downgraded to doubtful for this game. That caused the line to move to Utah -7.5, and with Jeff Sims expected to start, the Utes could be favored by as many as 10.5 by Saturday night.

⬆️ Devon Dampier Over 205.5 passing yards (-114) ⭐⭐⭐

Utah quarterback Devon Dampier leads the Big 12 and is 11th among FBS quarterbacks in completion percentage (72%), while his 22.2 completions per game ranks third in the Big 12.

The Utes' defense should help Dampier and the offense control the time of possession, as Arizona State ranks 127th in converting just 30.9% of its third downs. Comparatively, Utah ranks 25th nationally in allowing opponents to convert just over 31% of their third-down opportunities.

I expect Utah to challenge Arizona State early and often through the air. The Sun Devils rank eighth out of 134 teams in run defense, while this is a matchup of Utah’s 38th-ranked team passing efficiency against Arizona State’s 63rd-ranked team passing efficiency defense.

Through FanDuel’s -114 price and 53.27% implied odds, a $10 wager would return $8.77 in profits if Dampier throws for at least 206 yards.
