Alabama controls its own destiny for a berth in the SEC Championship as it heads to Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, S.C., to take on South Carolina, and we break down this conference tilt with our Alabama vs. South Carolina prediction. The opening odds see the Crimson Tide as a 13.5-point betting favorite ahead of Saturday's 3:30 p.m. ET (ABC) kick, but my early picks back the home underdogs in this tricky situational spot.

As our college football predictions for Week 9 get underway, I'm making this contrarian play the first of my college football picks this week.

🐓  South Carolina +13.5 (-110) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Crimson Tide have knocked off four consecutive ranked opponents (Georgia, Vanderbilt, Missouri, and Tennessee). Sandwhiched between those wins and home games against LSU and Oklahoma after a bye next week is this matchup with South Carolina, and that has me backing the Gamecocks in a prime letdown spot for the favorites.

One dash of optimism for South Carolina is that it held Sooners quarterback John Mateer to a season-low 150 passing yards last week.

The Gamecocks will likely have to cover this spread on the heels of another fantastic defensive effort, as they entered last week ranked 123rd in points per drive before mustering just one touchdown against Oklahoma. But South Carolina has covered two spreads of at least 21 points in its last two games against Alabama by an average of more than 10 points per game.

As of this writing, there was no difference between any of the best sports betting sites, as South Carolina was a 13.5-point ‘dog at -110 odds (carrying a 52.38% implied probability) across the market. If the Gamecocks cover, my $10 winning wager would net $9.09 in profits.

Latest college football odds updated live in real time.

📈 Alabama vs. South Carolina opening odds

  • Moneyline: Alabama -580 | South Carolina +420
  • Spread: Alabama -13.5 (-110) | South Carolina +13.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: Over 47.5 (-110) | Under 47.5 (-110)

💡 Alabama vs. South Carolina odds analysis

Given how public a team Alabama is and how it rolled through four straight ranked teams by a near 10-point average margin of victory, there is little doubt that this line will eventually at least reach the key number of 14. Thus, South Carolina backers can likely wait for a better number, as it would take an abundance of sharp money to keep the spread under two touchdowns.

The early betting splits are 3/1 in favor of Alabama, so this line could move by the end of the day Monday.

The O/U splits are even more egregious, as 86% of the early tickets are backing the Over. Thus, with the best sports betting apps split between totals of 47 and 47.5, those at 47 should at least align with the rest of the market, and all will likely touch 48 or higher at some point.

Do not expect complete one-way movement on the total. There is likely to eventually be buyback on the Under given that it has cashed in five of South Carolina’s seven games.
