Zach Wilson Knee Surgery Means Joe Flacco Likely To Start Week 1 For Jets

New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson suffered a knee injury in the preseason opener and, following surgery, it looks like he will not be ready to start the season.

It is not easy making the jump to starting quarterback straight from college, but Wilson has significant room for improvement in his second season. After suffering a knee injury in the first preseason game, though, it appears that Wilson will not be ready to start in Week 1.

The 23-year-old BYU standout was the second pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He started 13 games as a rookie, completing a meager 55.6 percent of his passes for 2,334 yards with nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

With Wilson out of the lineup, that means that 37-year-old Joe Flacco will likely take over as the Week 1 starter. He has started five games for the Jets over the past two seasons, losing all five and completing just 57.4 percent of his passes. However, he has thrown nine touchdowns against just three interceptions in that span.

Wilson has not really established a level of competence at the NFL level, so his absence from the lineup has not had a major effect on the lines for the Jets’ Week 1 game against Baltimore. The Ravens are favored by seven points for that game at DraftKings, FanDuel, and Caesars.
