The Nevada Gaming Control Board released figures showcasing there was just shy of $180 million bet on Super Bowl LVI across the state’s 179 sportsbooks

It represents an increase in handle of 32 percent from last season and is the highest total in Super Bowl history. Such significant growth where there’s been long-standing legalized gambling is telling of the growing popularity and accessibility of sports betting for new, casual and experienced bettors.

Nevada sportsbooks won $15,413,288, equating to a hold percentage of 8.6 – the third highest total and fifth highest percentage over the past 10 years.

“BetMGM had a challenging start to the Super Bowl with Odell Beckham Jr. scoring the first touchdown and unfavorable results in the first quarter and first half. That said, the second half went the book’s way. We dodged a bullet with the Rams winning in regulation as overtime would have been the worst possible result in what was the most bet on  Super Bowl ever.” – Jason Scott, VP of Trading, BetMGM.

The increase wasn’t a surprise, though.

The American Gaming Associated (AGA) issued a press release last week projecting a record 31.4 million Americans would wager on Super Bowl LVI.

“The results are clear: Americans have never been more interested in legal sports wagering. The growth of legal options across the country not only protects fans and the integrity of games and bets, but also puts illegal operators on notice that their time is limited.” – Bill Miller, AGA President and CEO.

It’s also worth noting the AGA estimated another 18.5 million Americans bet casually with friends or participated in a Super Bowl LVI pool or squares contest.

The momentum of sports gambling across North America aligns with the continued expansion of legalization to allow more bettors access to sportsbooks. Although, perhaps, it’s just as telling that there was significant growth in an established market like Nevada.
