Netherlands vs. USA  Preview

The Netherlands (2-1-0) and USA (1-2-0) each failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, but they have made it past the group stage and will open the round of 16 this morning. Louis van Gaal’s squad ranks eighth in the FIFA Men's World Rankings and locked down the first spot in Group A. USA ranks 16th and finished second behind England (2-1-0) in Group B. Both teams are undefeated, and the States are looking to upset the Dutch by qualifying for their third quarter-final in World Cup history.

USA

The 1-0 win against Iran marked the first victory over the past six matches for the USA, who began the tournament with consecutive draws to Wales and England. Christian Pulisic has been involved in the only two goals for the States, scoring the game-winner on Tuesday and assisting Timothy Weah against Wales.

Pulisic was removed from the game following his heroic goal and sent to a local hospital, where he was diagnosed with a pelvic contusion. The midfielder posted on social media from his hospital bed, confirming he would play in the team’s second consecutive elimination game. Striker Josh Sargent (ankle) and midfielder Weston McKennie (quad) are likely to start for Gregg Berhalter’s squad, though they may not be one hundred percent.

After a third-place finish in the first FIFA World Cup in 1930, the USA has failed to make it back to the semi-final round. They have now reached the round of 16 in each of the last three tournaments they have qualified for, but they have not defeated a UEFA team in World Cup play dating back to 2002.

Netherlands

The Netherlands are undefeated under manager Louis van Gaal across all competitions. They continued their streak of passing the group stage in World Cups they have qualified for dating back to 1934, failing to qualify in 2018 after finishing 2nd and 3rd in the previous two tournaments.

Winger Cody Gakpo has scored in each of the team’s three games. Van Gaal’s entire starting lineup should be available, however, Nathan Ake and Matthis de Ligt are one yellow card away from being suspended for a potential quarter-final.

Betting Preview

The Netherlands (-240) is heavily favored over the USA (+190) to qualify for the next round and ranks seventh in the outright market (+1700), with the States sitting in 11th at +9000. The USA were victorious in the most recent match 4-3 in 2015 after rallying from down 3-1 and taking the lead in the 90th minute. The game will kick off at 10:00 am ET.
