Nishikori wins as Korolev retires down one set and 2-5 in the 2nd. Sucks for people who play at books requiring 2 sets for action! Marchenko looks like he is going to nut this total. He should have won the first set after he broke Cilic early and held a firm lead. Now he's been broken in the 2nd set, probably going to wind up 6-4. Has to win a set to have a shot.

BERANKIS -136
Had to go with one of my favorite young players today in Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis. He draws Sweeting today. Sweeting has only won one main draw match in his four tries at the US Open and that was due to retirement. Sweeting did make some main draws during the summer this year, but for the most part he is an average player on the surface. Berankis is still learning the hard stuff, but seems to be adapting to it well with a Challenger final in Vancouver this summer and running through qualis at the Open pretty solidly. Berankis made the main draw at Wimbledon and scored his first Slam win there and appears excited at the opportunity to do the same in NY. I don't think Sweeting is a bad player by any means nor will this be a lopsided match IMO, but I am siding with the better talent here as Berankis is going to be a guy's name you hear more and more in the very near future.

Marchenko rolled over and died. It was between that over and Monfils-Kendrick at 37. Looks like I will regret that as Kendrick is set to win the opening set.

Well Dodig and Gonzo are doing what I thought, lots of service holds and then a tie break. Dodig played like a douche in the break. Really think he needed to win that set to have a chance to win this match, but we'll see. Think the longer he can take it, the less likely Gonzo is to stick around.

Damn Kendrick-Monfils total hits. Gotta remember tomorrow just to go with the one I like beforehand and not wait for the stupid books to post numbers to pull me in other directions.

Dodig crushes Gonzo in the 2nd set. Perhaps Gonzo will fade away after all. Berankis up a break in the 1st on Sweeting at 4-3.

Had this one in my pocket and decided to use it even though the price has fallen some. McHale draws Vania King. King won their only career meeting earlier this year in straights. Through the summer though, it appears McHale is the one now shaping into form. She made the main draw at Stanford, going 1-1 with a loss to Stosur. Made a deep run at the ITF level in Vancouver on this surface and she made the 3rd round in Cincinnati, losing to Clijsters. She did not play well in qualis in New Haven last week, but King did as well and she retired from her match. I had a feeling heading into the Open that there would be another TV-made story with an American making a run. McHale is my pick this year. If she can get her 1st serve in consistently, she could get another main draw win at the Open.

The mighty mite draws Bellucci. Smyczek spends most of his time playing on hard courts albeit at the Challenger level mostly. He did make the main draw in LA this summer and took a set from Andy Murray. He should be excited getting into the US Open main draw for the first time. Bellucci's game just does not translate to this surface right now. He's 1-3 on the surface this summer with his lone win against another non-hard court winner, Benjamin Becker. A loss to Baghdatis is excusable in 3 tough sets, but getting bageled in the 3rd set against Lacko last week could signal an early exit for Bellucci. If Smyczek puts the ball back in play and lets Bellucci error himself to death, the American has a legit shot today. I think this is precisely the kind of player Bellucci does not want to play on this surface. Handicap of +5 for Smyczek here also available at -125 for those not inclined to taking the ML.

Alright Alright. Berankis goes up 2-1. Really should have won this in straights, but he blew the lead in the 2nd set. Hoping he can finish it in the 4th.

Berankis wins in 4. Little shaky at times by giving breaks back to Sweeting, but overall a nice performance. He's got an interesting 2nd rounder against either Melzer or Tursunov. Should be a nice doggie to look at in Round 2 perhaps, neither of those guys has a game that will totally dominate him IMO + they're grinding through a 5 setter right now too.

If Hewitt can finish that parlay and the two dogs I have left to play can at least split, I'll consider today a decent start.
