    ATP Atlanta/WTA Carlsbad in-match thread

Please discuss this evening's matches with myself and others in this thread. Complain about your bet, talk smack about a player you don't like, try reverse jinxes, discuss your bet ideas, or root your bets on to victory ... It's whatever. All I ask is that you don't get into fights or name-calling battles with other posters in this thread.

We've got Roddick/Russell, Isner/Sock, Lepchenko/Petrova and Bartoli/McHale on the menu. Could there be a big upset or two on the way, or will the chalk get it done?

Let's start the weekend off on the right foot by talking tennis ... and gambling, too.

    Mcwhale should win today
Farto wasn't convincing against king and she's capable of throwing a match at any point

I like McHale's chances, but I believe the over may be the safer play. Bartoli wants to have a good run during the U.S. Open Series and is skipping the Olympics, so I don't expect a straight-set beating.

TI is tipping McHale heavily, another reason why I can't touch either ML in this match. If everyone at TI is on someone, I hate backing them. lol.

Roddick and Russell are producing some powerful serves tonight. Lots of service games that are ending to love or to 15.

Exciting match if you like aces and poor returns of serve ... Dull match if you prefer lengthy rallies and the tension of multiple break points.

That he is. But at least he has passion. If you put money on him you know he won't give up like so many other players do.

I've never had any run-ins with Roddick, but I have heard a lot of bad things about him. Seems like he has made a lot of enemies during his time as a pro tennis player.

Roddick breaks Russell at 4-4. Now, he can serve this match out ... much to beefcake's chagrin.

I really like the +4.5 for isnet sock match. Sock has been impressive and Isner is not the best at breaking people.

Lepchenko battling back in the second set. Got a huge hold in the opening game of the set to prevent Petrova from smashing her foot on the gas pedal ... Another three-set match in Carlsbad wouldn't surprise me at all.

Yes Lepchenko escaped a few games in the 2nd on serve.

Nice ... a tiebreak to decide the Lepchenko/Petrova match.

And they both held serve in the 3rd. Shocker.

Petrova gets the mini-break to win the tiebreaker. A good, grind-it-out win for Petrova. Lepchenko's loss leaves McHale as the only American left in this tournament.

Got lucky on that Patrova win. Not sure if I should play the McHale Bartoli. I can tell you it will be a whole different scenario than this one. Over under 13 breaks?

Meanwhile, in Atlanta, we have another delay (I assume) just as Sock was starting to show that he can hang with Isner.

I believe McHale will hold serve a decent amount, but Bartoli's hip is the X-factor. Her hip problems could lead to some free points for McHale when she is on the return.

I think this is going three despite Bartoli's struggles, but McHale has a lot of things going for her in this spot (home crowd, injured Bartoli, televised match on ESPN2, a hard-court win over Bartoli at the US Open, etc.) that give her a good chance to advance.

The one thing Bartoli has going for her is that she crashed and burned at Stanford and would like nothing less than an appearance in this final. She needs points, but more importantly, she needs a confidence-building victory. Bartoli needs this one more than McHale.

Desire doesn't directly lead to execution and victory, though.

Now that I've posted this, watch Bartoli or McHale roll in straight sets. lol.

Sock and Isner have resumed their match. Sock down 4-2 in the first set but looking to break.

Bad start for McHale. Looks nervous out there, but Bartoli is also focused as I expected. I really feel that Bartoli will want this win more, but her form lately could betray her at some point in this match ... Or she could just stomp McHale like she did in Beijing.

The Big Tie Break doing what the Big Tie Break does. Turns what should have been a 6-3 1st set into a 7-6 scenario.

And The Big Tie Break does what The Big Tie Break does ... wins mother f-ing tie breaks no matter the plot, the end of the story is the same. He probably should already be half way to winning the 2nd set, but f-ed around enough to turn that into a long set. Such is Isner.

Whoever said Bartoli is injured should fukk himself. She's clearly not, and extremely motivated. Not looking good for my LAA/McHale parlay.
