#1067THIS is why everyone hates bird-shit so much...re: win+lose results he's as solid as they come...seldom beats anyone higher than himself and seldom loses to anyone lower...
but he's just death to bet on GL or SL...cuz he doesn't have that finisher's instinct...
I honestly think that when he gets up and is sure to win...he starts trying to "work on" shit for his longer-term growth as a player...smart and good for him...but terrible if you bet on him GL to squash someone
there's a lot to be said for practicing in-match the stuff you've been working on in practice...and best time for it is in the 2nd set after you've convinced yourself the opponent is no real threat to beat you...
back in the day, my wrestling coach would kill us if we pinned some noob fish quickly...and passed up a great opportunity to ingrain the new skills we were working on...so i can understand this...to the rest of the world they wonder..."what's wrong with ABC..why can't he finish this guy"...but to ABC, they're growing in confidence that the stuff they were doing in practice really "works" in a match against a live opponent...so they'll then be less hesitant to do that new thing against a higher-rated opponent, possibly surprise the shit out of them when they do something from the "ad" side for the first time, that they'd come to expect only from the "deuce" side...blablabla
anyhow, birdshit got serious just in time to keep our fat-payout parlay sailing alongLast edited by fitguy67; 02-10-15, 03:20 PM.Comment -

#1069i think there's more to it than lapsing in focus/effort..i added another paragraph to the post above yours...something i've never really heard discussed on forums like this...
we always figure these guys are trying to squash lesser opponents as quickly as possible...and when they don't...it means there is something "wrong"...
but there may not be anything wrong at all...they may have just changed "modes": turning the focus of their effort from short-term winning this match to long-term becoming an overall better player...taking advantage of the situation where they're not worried about getting the W...to work on incorporating some new skills into their game (much of this aimed at becoming more ambidextrous--learning to do what's easy/natural from the "ad" side on the unnatural "deuce" side and vice versa)...to get better in the long run by trying out new shit...you have to bear with losing points in the short run...
but if the in-match practice session is costing them TOO many points, and putting the result in jeopardy...bang!, back to the "bread and butter" and finish the mouse they were playing with off
____________
Berdy may be the best example of this...we often see him struggle in the middle of matches against clearly-lesser players...but he very seldom actually loses to them...
the parts of his matches where he's unexplainedly struggling might just be the parts where he's changed his focus from winning today to increasing his stock long-term by developing/polishing some of the now-less-reliable weapons in his stockpile...
eventually, the impromptu "practice session" will have to end and he'll apparently "regain focus" and close out the deal (as he did thankfully at 5-5, receiving today)Last edited by fitguy67; 02-10-15, 03:57 PM.Comment -

match for granted until it got serious on him. then he beared down.Comment -

great parlay we had going there...not often that what looks like the weakest link going in actually plays out that way...5 games to young Liebens seemed low--but Barthel ain't Serena, now is she?...of course Andujar will win now!Last edited by fitguy67; 02-10-15, 04:41 PM.Comment -
