Crazy that Netherlands could (likely) be eliminated today;
If they lose and Denmark is able to DRAW against possibly the most overrated team in this tournament, its already over for the Dutch.

wow
I believe that distinction belongs to England, not the Portuguese ....
Your knowledge of soccer is obviously limited if you feel as if Portugal (who was priced at 18-1) is the most overrated team in the tourney ...

That last goal from Van Persie was very important to Holland. Could be a 3-way tie for second place. I think Germany can beat Denmark, but do they have reason to? Hmmm... love how this is shaping up.

That Van Persie goal has no importance whatsoever on the race for second place. Didn't matter for Holland if they lost with 1-2 or 0-6.

Don't get me wrong, but thats absolutely false information. The goal was VERY important to even have a slight chance to advance to the quarter finals. If they did not score one goal they would need to win with 3 goals or more against Portugal to advance (with Germany beating Denmark to nil of course)! Now with one goal scored, they "only" need to win with 2 or more goals.
Now it gets even more complicated:
If Denmark scores 1 goal against Germany then Holland needs to win with 3 or more goals (going up with Denmark goals, so DEN 1-2 GER, and NED needs at least e.g. POR 1-4 NED)

@Loola: the goal was unimportant for Holland's chances. In the event of a three way tie all results against Germany are ignored and only the games these three have played against eachother will be used to determine who goes through.

That will be thrown out too.......Port beat Denmark......Denmark beat Holland.....Holland beat Port......which means they go with goal differential.
Do the math.......Holland need to win 2-0 and Germany beat Denmark....both Germans and Dutch go through

Denmark must lose and Holland must beat Portugal by 2 or more goal difference.This is the only way Holland goes through !!! The goal that RVP scored was very important ... if that goal was not scored , then holland must beat portugal by 3 or more goals

Denmark beats holland...portugal beats denmark ....holland beats portugal .... each team has 3points regarding H2H matches ,so the goal difference is the key .
If denmark loses 1-0 and Holland wins 1-0 , portugal will advance because the goal differences will be : Denmark 3-4 ,portugal 3-4 , holland 2-3 ....holland cant advance cuz has SCORED less goals ...The dilemma is between denmark and portugal , but portugal beat denmark so portugal will advance.
If denmark loses ,holland must win by 2 goals , because the goal difference will be zero/pozitiv for holland and negativ for portugal

The goal is VERY VERY important ....the games between each other are : denmark 3 points ,portugal 3 points , holland 3 points .... now the goal difference is the key .,that's why the goal RVP scored is importnat.

Wrong.
They could have lost 10:0 or 15:0 yesterday and it wouldn't have mattered.
Let me clarify this and make an example...
All three HOL, DEN, POR have three points.
The criteria is now: Higher points obtained AMONG these three teams. GERMANY EXCLUDED. Nobody gives a rats ass how who played against Germany. Only the goals/wins/losses among these three HOL DEN POR matter ! - THESE ARE THE OFFICIAL REGULATIONS.
So back to that example: Let's say Germany beats Denmark 2:1 and Holland beats Portugal 2:1
Portugal with 3 points (win against Denmark 3:2 and loss against Holland 1:2, goal difference 4:4)
Denmark with 3 points (win against Holland 1:0 and loss against Portugal 2:3, goal difference 3:3)
Holland with 3 points (win against Portugal 2:1 and loss against Denmark 0:1, goal difference 2:2)
POINTS OBTAINED: ALL THREE EQUAL
GOAL DIFFERENCE: ALL THREE EQUAL +-0
PORTUGAL GO THROUGH WITH THE MOST GOALS SCORED, which is FOUR.
Now just change the numbers in the upcoming games HOL/POR and GER/DEN and do the math.
As someone mentioned, if Portugal loses f.ex. 0:2 against Holland and the Germans win (who gives a fuk what score) let's say 10:0 against Danmark --- HOLLAND GOES THROUGH because of the +1 Goal difference (0:1 against DEN, f.ex. 2:0 against HOL)
Thank you.

Sorry, Zilchy was right. Goal differential is applied for the teams that are tied; the goal against Germany doesn't come into play until other tie breakers are exhausted. From the EUFA Euro 2012 Rules, section 8.07:
If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the
following criteria are applied, in the order given; to determine the rankings:
a) higher number of points obtained in the matches among the teams in question;
b) superior goal difference in the matches among the teams in question (if more
than two teams finish equal on points);
c) higher number of goals scored in the matches among the teams in question (if
more than two teams finish equal on points);
d) superior goal difference in all the group matches;
and a few more.
