It is impossible to go bust betting Kelly. You can become "effectively" bust, but even that is very unlikely unless you're making consistent -EV plays.

I wonder if the 1/4-1/2 system (with the right operator) would actually reduce that number. Maybe 1/4-1/3. At worst, Id wager that it would only raise it slightly, whilst drastically raising your growth.

Kelly doesnt care what you use. Entirely up to you. Whatever you tell Kelly to maximize, it will. Best definition is whatever you are willing to lose, which is just an approximation imo, because it should depend on why you are losing, which isn't currently quantifiable.
