This is why matchbook needs an affiliate program so the word can out to US Players. I'm not saying that matchbook will be as big as Betfair but it will be a lot bigger than it is now. Most US bettors don't know who matchbook is.

Art Vandeleigh is right. Every Dollar, or Euro, is counted twice. So, you should split that stunning number.
And how big would be the volume on the NFL at Betfair if U. S. punters were ALLOWED?
it is stunning indeed. i wonder how much action euro bookies get.
some points worth noting: they count volume twice, and there may be people closing their psoitions with that volume getting added again. and there are euro bookings hedging.
nevertheless, it's still pretty good.

Are you nuts, 3 million impressive?
How do you know how much action the big books take on a NFL game?
If someone told me Pinny or theGreek took 3m in action on Jets vs. NE, i'd have thought "what, that isn't much"...

Yeah, but the size of the US economy is close to the size of the combined economies of the EU. It is larger than the economies of China and India combined (about twice the size actually).
Does the Premier League have anyone with a 10 year, $275M guaranteed contract? No.
People like to exagerrate the importance of soccer as compared to football, baseball, and basketball. Those three sports are also international sports.
If it was legal to bet online in the US, there was an exchange like BetFair, and they were allowed to advertise, then you would see much bigger numbers being bet on NFL games than on any normal soccer game. $3M is chump change.
Billions of destitute people in Asia and Africa may love soccer, but they're not going to be betting on it.

Wait til you see the superbowl betting on betfair - now that is unreal, considering it's a 'foreign' sport.

To all my fellow Americans, "you guys need to quit smoking crack, Soccer is the world's number one sport and get over it." Why can't you guys get it? Jesus, more action gets taken on Soccer and you feel the need to defend American Football like your feelings are hurt or something.

95% of the money on a game is traded, I personally lay out 8-10k on the premiership at the start of every week. By game times I've traded probably 3x that and will end up not having a cent on the results, I would be the most common type of bettor on betfair.
So you see, by the time all the trading is taken out of the equation very little of that cash stays in the hands of betfair. Thats why they are always advertising and Matchbox is under pressure.

If you visit betfair from North America(north am IP) it will list "Football" under "Soccer"
That way dumbs and dumbers can find the game
NFL is listed under NFL football .
For the rest of the world Football is listed under Football

Betfair and other big EU books are the place to be right now, unfortunately some countries don't let their citizens get a piece of the pie.
I take wagers for a few people in this situation

We are not talking about which is the world's most popular team sport. We all know that is soccer. We are talking about the amount of money bet on it. We are talking about money, not the amount of people who like the game. Why is it so hard to understand? If soccer is still king in this regard, the "U.S. sports" are not that far behind.

Every goal scored in soccer give them 7 points, every time they almost score ex. hit the post give them 3 points. Then you will get scores like American Football.

that's about the dumbest thing I've ever seen
Aussie football average scores are something like 110-85 so obviously it is the best code on the planet!
In truth it is but what an absurd way of coming to that conclusion.

at least in soccer you get 90 minutes of almost continuous action
I'd much rather watch that than the thing the Yanks call "football" (in truth a screwed up version of rugby) where there's rarely any contact between ball and foot or even 10 sec of continuous action and 2 minutes of play can take half an hour to complete

betfair used to count volume on bets twice - once as laid and once as backed. so real volume is 1/2 of what you see. beside that there are a lot of arbers on soccer/european football. so many at least 30% of rest volume is some kind of not real. not to mention that on other markets like tennis and basketball there are much more arbers or traders. some kind of piece of history is the fact that on the final match of Roland Garos in 2009 between Federer and Nadal with volume of 52 mln(!) pound, betfair won on charges for this game around 55 k. so if we accept that normal charge is 5% that means that real volume on this market was 1mln and the rest of 51mln were just trades/bets that were covered. And that was one of the reasons for the Premium charge back in 2008.
