Masked Men Knockoff Armored Car in STL and get off with Millions
ST. LOUIS – Four armed bandits clad from head to toe in black overpowered two workers at an ATM-servicing business Monday, then used an armored vehicle to haul away possibly millions of dollars in a well-orchestrated heist.
Neither of the employees at the ATM Solutions Inc. holdup in St. Louis' theater district was harmed by the masked suspects, St. Louis police Capt. Michael Caruso said.

The robbers subdued the workers with duct tape and locked them inside the vault after the raid, Caruso said. Some media outlets reported that the robbers made off with $4 million and $5 million. Caruso said he had no immediate details of how much was taken.

Authorities found the armored vehicle — a specially modified van — about 90 minutes later less than two miles away.
"You don't see anything like this every day," Caruso told reporters. "It's certainly alarming, to say the least. It was carefully planned. They knew what they were doing. They didn't appear to have any intent to hurt anybody, which is an important key here."

Caruso waved off a reporter's question as to whether there was any indication an employee of the business may have taken part in the heist, given the knowledge the suspects appeared to have about the business' routine. That's "totally unknown," Caruso said.
The FBI was assisting in the investigation, an agency spokeswoman said, declining additional comment beyond what police released.

Caruso said the four bandits waited for one of the business' employees to come to work, then rushed in behind him, disarmed and subdued him before waiting for a second employee to arrive, apparently knowing it took two workers to separately punch in access codes to open the vault.

Once inside the vault, Caruso said, the suspects bound the workers with duct tape, loaded up the cash in containers and fled, locking the two victims inside the vault unharmed.

Caruso said two of the suspects had semiautomatic pistols, one had a rifle and the fourth had an unspecified type of firearm. Bullets found scattered outside the business were from the victim's handguns that the suspects stole and emptied, Caruso said.

Police planned to look at some surveillance video from the area, hoping it offered clues to the suspects' identities, Caruso said.
Cincinnati-based ATM Solutions replenishes cash in ATMs and maintains the machines for banks and other customers in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. A message left Monday with the company was not immediately returned.

No way there was millions in the armored car. I'm always surprised when I pick up my local paper how often the banks around here are robbed. Every week one is getting knocked over.

Well, they were smart enough to do the job; and if they don't get caught from this, hopefully they're smart enough not to go suddenly purchasing large-ticket items in that area. I like the idea of going to vegas and laundering it that way, provided that you're not suddenly betting $10,000 a hand when your previous year's tax returns were for ~50k/year.

there is more to the story...for example just one of the robbers having a cell phone with him when the heist took plays compromised everything, the electronic capabilities the FBI and other secret agencies have this days are amazing. You must be a genius to pull something like this without getting caught.

The only identified suspect in Monday's robbery of ATM Solutions will be held in jail for now, after a federal judge said that there was probable cause to find that he was a felon in possession of a gun.
John Wesley Jones, 36, appeared in federal court in St. Louis Friday morning. At that hearing, St. Louis police Det. Roger Murphey described the events that led to Jones' arrest Tuesday.
Many of the allegations were already known from Jones' charging documents:
Police spotted a black Dodge Charger that was a "vehicle of interest" in Monday's robbery at 3721 Grandel Square by four armed, masked men. Murphey and his partner began following the Charger and the car sped off after Murphey activated the lights and siren, hitting another vehicle several blocks later. Jones was arrested after a brief foot chase, and investigators later found a pistol and cash in the car. Jones' told police and the FBI that he had the gun to protect the cash.
There were a few new details revealed Friday morning.
Murphey told U.S. Magistrate Judge David Noce that police believed that money from the stolen ATM Solutions van had been transferred to a black Charger with heavily-tinted windows, like the one Jones was driving.
The gun police found in the car had been stolen, Murphey said.
The car was not stolen, and there was other reason to pull the car over, Murphey said.
Murphey also said that after investigators arrested Jones, they went to he house from which he was spotted leaving. Although Murphey did not give the address of the house, it offered a possible reason for a day-long standoff Wednesday outside of a home in the 4100 block of Page Boulevard.
After firing tear gas inside, sending in a robot and raiding the building with flash-bang disruptive devices, police and the FBI discovered that no one was home.
They have not commented on what they found inside.
During the hearing, Jones' lawyer, Joel Schwartz, asked Murphey whether Jones' statement had been recorded, or written down. It had not.
There was no mention of the quantity of cash stolen - or the amount allegedly found in the Charger.
Police sources have said that $11 million had been taken, and at least $500,000 found in the car. The FBI has disputed the $11 million figure, but won't elaborate.
Murphey, Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Poehling, and two other investigators present at the hearing all declined to comment afterwards.
After the hearing, Schwartz said that he doubted that Jones, a convicted burglar and robber who was sentenced to 45 years in prison in Kentucky, would talk to police.
"You think a guy like that would make a statement?" Schwartz asked. "I would disagree strongly - take issue with what they found in that vehicle," he added.
Schwartz waived a detention hearing for Jones, meaning that he will be held in jail without bond.
At the end of the hearing, Noce said that there was probable cause to believe that Jones was in possession of the gun.
Poehling told Noce that he did not yet know when the case would be presented to a grand jury for a possible indictment on the firearm charge.
On Wednesday, Supervisory Special Agent Dan Netemeyer of the FBI said Wednesday that federal prosecutors would decide if there is enough evidence to charge Jones in the robbery.
ATM Solutions is offering a reward of up to $150,000 for information on the case, and the FBI asked tipsters to call their office at 314-589-2500.
