anybody ever rented a room in someone's house? how did it work out? what were the issues? i'm currently renting a room from a close family member, but they're are always broke and squeezing every dime i get. no way i can stay here and expect a deal to be kept. figure it's better to move in with a stranger so you can at least have a contract both parties are expected to uphold. don't even wanna work right now because i'm making peanuts anyway and not having anything left to show for it. 20 hours, 30 hours, 40 hours, doesn't matter.....same goddamn difference.....a big fat ******* ZERO in my pocket

#2Is the close family member broke because he has to pay a mortgage and you only have to pay rent?Comment -

#3is that not the purpose of paying a mortgage and renting a room out? why would i be agreeable to paying the full mortgage price when i use 1 room and share a bathroom? in the past 3 weeks, i have given him equal to what the mortgage would be anyways. don't get me wrong, i love this family member, but i am looking down the road....at some point i'm gonna snap come payday when i get told i need to give up my paycheck because they're trying to cover a bounced check......and it's hard for me to lie about being broke, i have no bills and everyone knows itOriginally posted by pavyracerIs the close family member broke because he has to pay a mortgage and you only have to pay rent?Comment -

#4I would explain the problem to them over a meal, See if an agreement can be reached because the first one isnt working. Me i would look for a new room asap. This sounds like a nightmare if you move out of there could be tension if you stay you will be miserable, its a tough spot.Comment -

#5That can be tough especially if they are cheap and paying for your utilities. They end up hanging out outside bathroom door counting your flushes or turning lights off behind you when your trying to read a book.Originally posted by empty cookie jaranybody ever rented a room in someone's house? how did it work out? what were the issues? i'm currently renting a room from a close family member, but they're are always broke and squeezing every dime i get. no way i can stay here and expect a deal to be kept. figure it's better to move in with a stranger so you can at least have a contract both parties are expected to uphold. don't even wanna work right now because i'm making peanuts anyway and not having anything left to show for it. 20 hours, 30 hours, 40 hours, doesn't matter.....same goddamn difference.....a big fat ******* ZERO in my pocket

#6true....i have an ad up now.....they know the deal.....it's hard to say no when someone comes to me about money because i'm single and have no kids, so it's like.....get money from empty cookie jar, he doesn't need it....they know i don't like paying the equivalent of their mortgage plus utilities, but these guys spend money like madmen....every week i'm told they'll be good next week, but never fails as payday nears.....getting paid back is laughable, even dad makes himself scarce these days.....Originally posted by babyanniI would explain the problem to them over a meal, See if an agreement can be reached because the first one isnt working. i'm just curious as to what issues i may run into if i share a house with a stranger....obviously, it will be easier to abide by a money agreement (at least i'm assuming).....but i need to get out of here.....better to have a little tension down the road from me hauling ass than to have a full fledged argument when i finally say "**** no, i sweated my nuts off for these peanuts and am going to have something to show for it this week".....
like i said above, i love said family members and certainly have my share of faults.....just a frustrating situation that experience has taught me will not get better until i leaveComment -

#7no, they're not cheap.....spending 50 bucks on the dollar menu at mcdonald's is their idea of value shoppingOriginally posted by Bill DozerThat can be tough especially if they are cheap and paying for your utilities. #8never get involved in any thing with family. They know they can guilt you into paying more because you love them. Move in with a stranger so you can pay $x & if they want more you can say "FUK YOU"Comment -

#9yeah, that's what i'm gonna do....it's hard too because this family member dropped everything he was doing to help me out of a nasty situation awhile back, so that makes it even harder....every time i get pissed i have to remind myself he sacrificed to help me out not too long ago.....best thing to do is just look for a place, and once i find one, just move....it may create a bit of "why the hell you not say anything sooner", but i know if i do we'll just talk it through, make a deal.....and nothing will change
possible issues of renting a room from someone? seems like most people are asking a bit much.....$400 a month seems to be the best deal around, that's for a room with private bath......if they expect help with food (i basically buy my own stuff, and if i didn't buy it i won't touch it), utilities, all that stuff.....then it starts getting to a point where it's like "why not just get my own place"? i'm trying to live cheap when school starts.....am i being unreasonable if i don't feel obligated to do yard work or household chores? (i'd be willing to, but would expect the rent to be reduced)......if i move in with a married couple, does that mean i should expect to deal with a woman's nagging for no good reason?.....i rented a house last year, landlord never bothered me, had nothing but good things to say when i moved out, but i treated the house as though i owned it.....feel like i should have less responsibility though if i'm only renting a 10 foot space.....ask me to cut grass and weed eat, i'll say sure, knock 20 bucks off the rent....is that the wrong attitude?Comment -
