Juwan Howard updates on Michigan basketball's health ahead of Illinois game:
The Michigan men’s basketball team, which has postponed its last two games due to COVID-19 issues, has seven scholarship players available ahead of Friday’s contest against Illinois, coach Juwan Howard said.
“Right now, at this moment, we have seven players and one coach available, but you never know how it can change tomorrow,” Howard said Thursday morning.
“Put your head down, lay on the pillow and … say a nice, beautiful prayer for everyone — which I love doing, and I feel it's the right thing out of my heart to do — and then wake up in the morning, you get the text from the trainer or call from a trainer as far as what we have available and who’s ready to go.”
Michigan has been dealing with COVID-19 issues since returning from a Dec. 30 contest at Central Florida. This has led the program to practice and play shorthanded, in addition to the two postponed games.
Four Wolverines — Terrance Williams II, Frankie Collins, Brandon Johns Jr. and Jaron Faulds — missed a Jan. 4 game against Rutgers for medical reasons, and the program says it fell below the Big Ten’s threshold of seven available scholarship players ahead of the Michigan State and Purdue contests.
Since then, the team has had “unorthodox” practices as they’ve dealt with continued absences.
“We've had very unorthodox practices as of late,” Howard said. “We haven't been able to have 10 players in practice in the last week or so. But we've always been able to figure out as far as how we can, those who are available to practice, what can we do to get them better and also get them ready.
“This is the challenging times that we all are dealing with. Some programs have dealt with it; we're not the first. Unfortunately when it's you, then you get a chance to see how challenging it really is. It’s frustrating when you don't have all your guys.”
Howard later added that he “loves the mindset” the team has taken through the health and schedule difficulties.
“It's remarkable just to be around a group that is not making excuses or crying out for a pity party or anything like that,” Howard said. “We’re rolling up our sleeves and staying together and staying locked in on the big picture.”
