Arlington like a lot of tracks have been on life support for a long time.Ive been a Horse racing fan a long time even was a pro for 10 years. But the last 10 years have barely watched. When Hollywood Park went and Bay Meadows as well was the last straw for me.Even Gulfstream Park Stronach destroyed that place it was a mecca and he turned it into a mall.Played a card there during the Polar vortex favorites i thing won every race.20,000 was the norm at Hollywood for a thursday. Now that is month of attendance at Santa Anita before the pandamic.

It sucks but the best thing that could happen to US racing would be for all but eight or ten tracks to close, which will eventually happen.

Its a visually nice track plus they do not allow the Rif Raff like hawthorne is filled with BUT to say its a great track is far from accurate. THE WORST management out of any track, horrid field size, plus the pollytrack was a huge failure. they treat the family of four who spends $40 on food and $10 betting better then the guy who wagers 200K+ a year with them. I'll miss the trackside OTB if that goes but other then that good bye!
Edit. I go to the million every year for the Gold Party and my God I could just punch a few of these young punks in the clubhouse with their Bow Ties and flashey colored suits.

The Track side OTB was a definite plus in the revamp, however I believe management's asses were tied tighter than we will ever know. The money from future development of that property was the target all along. Sad to see it go.
Hawthorne is okay - a B track as I see it, but it may push ahead with it being the only viable track left in chi town.
Hollywood was heaven. I loved that track and really do miss it - as a past horse owner. Santa Anita - the players are still pushing money thru off track/phone so it will survive.......Gulfstream is a boutique lol. Believe it or not they are making a ton of dough. Look at the totals wagered per race that they show on the screen at the end of each race - were looking at close to 800 grand on average - after takeout. Stronach is smiling all the way to the bank.
I know, long post I do agree though closing some of these tracks just may be the answer for the future of racing in NA.

Rivers is huge very nearby and majority owned by Churchill. Basically they just went with the new location and don't want a nearby competitor. Lots of people would like to see the Bears move out there, but their lease still runs through 2030 and I doubt Chi is letting them out.

How so?
It's actually a great area, right along the Metra rail going downtown.
It'll probably become an entertainment/concert venue.

I'm not doubting the total handle, I will question that the number is before takeout.

The handle for Sunday (2/21) for 11 races was 10.6M..
What's the takeout?

No more Arlington million. Use to fly in there on a package deal. Stay at hotel
next to the track. Free shuttle and program. Free buffet.

Poly was the last blow. A sign of the times, leftist maneuver that ruined racing on the hype and outrage that horse racing is detrimental to horses. What happened? Other tracks cointinued to run and do well, and Arlington plummeted along with the state of IL. I love turf racing so this is a sad day, but I didn't bother going to Arlington anyway, anymore as I was from the other side of the city and going out and getting back to the city was only reasonable for western and northern suburbanites. Also as I followed racing more and more I realized that betting big days at various tracks, and watching with a friend or two who really loved racing along with the OTB bums, was more fun than "the day out" with the family.

are the illinois OTBs (other than arlington trackside) still taking 5% out of wins? i thought that was just ridiculous... bet a bridge jumper and if it pays 2.10 you get your 2.00 back

I tried getting that answer today. All the info I got was use 22% as an average which is kinda what I was doing - but you may be right with all the other gimmick bets which I do not play it could reach 30%.
Got to admit thats a lot of coin for a Sunday card.

The takeout is not 30%; 22% is a good rule of thumb. If they did 10.6 mil in nine races, that's a little north of a quarter mil they're making per race.
