Never understood the nickname Big gm James myself. Did he get this before mlb career? He's like 20 games over .500 in 9 seasons I believe, a losing post season record, losing record at Kauffman this year, and has never won more than 16 in a season. Shields is from Santa Clara (well Newall actually) and when he was pitching HS out there (near LA) he was always pitching big games.
So like the real "Big game" James Worthy, they started calling James Shields "Big game" too.

Shields turned pro out of HS, never played college ball.
He was LA HS player of the year in 1999, turned pro in 2000
