Best Books or Resources for a Beginner
What are the best books or resources for someone who is just getting into sports betting? I am transitioning over from poker and looking to start out very small but don't want to go in completely blind. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Sharp Sports Betting by Stanford Wong

Weighing the Odds in Sports Betting by King Yao

    Conquering Risk by Elihu Feustel

Those should get you started and keep you busy for a bit.

    Good luck.

Always remember if books were the answer we would all be winning

Just like in the stock market or always seminars and other tools that you have to pay for just are not worth it it's a square way of thinking

The best way to learn is bet real money very small and learn by trial and error

Start w jj's videos on how to be a successful shut in. Then seek out the teachings of one Brock Landers. After mastering those 2 you can advance to posting up at great sponsors like legendz, wager chief and bet islands.

Start out by wagering those betpoints. If you transition to betting cash, bet small and for entertainment purposes only. In the long term you will most likely lose. GL.

People that write books are failures usually in the real game, I would be at book store now if those silly books worked.

By saying that you are assuming most of us have read those books or read books in general.

I can honestly say i havent picked up a book of any sort in over 10 years.

Thanks for the replies. I wasn't looking for a magic book but just something for a beginner that would go over general information/give me some things to think about. Like poker, I have to find what works for me and I agree about trial and error.

In regards to Sharp Sports Betting, is that just for football or does it go into other sports. Might hold off on that one for now but will take a look at Weighing the Odds and Conquering Risk.

What kind of things were you guys doing when you first started? Just looking to get pointed in the right direction.

                Thanks again.

Big Reemer lost to Brock Landers. Just go with your gut pal.

Stay away from mush off contests and the homos listed above.

u just have to know sports. if u didnt grow up watching sports, watch sports with interest now (with no money on the line), and didn't play sports you have no chance in hell.

and there are no books that are gonna give you the magic weapon to win money betting sports. trends are for losers. who the public is on is for losers. line movements are for losers.

put stock in momentum, put stock in if a team is motivated, put stock in a team's head coach, put stock in team's that perform well under pressure, put stock in a team's mental makeup (reflection of the coach usually). look for events that can turn/change a team's attitude. know how big a certain game is for each team involved, a lot of times a game means a lot more for team A than team B. also pick up hints of team chemistry. these are teams we are betting on, not the best group of individuals. and most importantly, don't even mess with spreads. if you can master the psychology of team sports, I am quickly learning you can make money at this simply by picking moneyline underdogs.

I am destroying MLB this year so far, and I dont look at standings, I dont look at trends, I dont look at line movements or who the public is on. I look for small things that can turn a team around (SD pounding Jose Fernandez, and going on to sweep the series). I look for games that are bigger for one team than the other (CLE/DET series that CLE just swept). I look for bad teams that are too big a favorite against anyone (SEA is -260 against HOU tonight). No one should ever be -260 against anyone, especially an average team at best, I dont care who is pitching. But alot of time in order for these things to matter a team has to be focused and motivated, they have to have a good coach.

I think if I knew less about sports I would be more effective.

I read 'education of a sports bettor' by Bob Mcune about 10 years ago and his method of handicapping baseball and basketball is very useful. I designed computer models to follow his advises and have been a pretty succesful hobby bettor. Now I like the bases and baskets much more than NFL.
