    RogueScholar's Philosophy Series: Reincarnation
Reincarnation is an ancient belief that some spiritual aspect of human beings survives death and is later reincorporated into another life, human or otherwise. It originated in India along with the concept of karma, and the two now share a symbiotic relationship, with one's karma being the decisive influence on the destiny of the life force to be reincarnated. A positive karma will evolve and "inherit" a more enlightened and fortunate life. Negative karma will direct the soul into an unfortunate life, or even an animal.

The cycle of death and rebirth through reincarnation is known as saṃsāra. It is believed to be finite, with the ultimate goal of reaching moksha, or freedom from rebirth and its physical limitations. This would be the equivalent of admittance into Heaven in Western religion. The methods for attaining this status differ from Western concepts of justification by "faith and good works" by incorporation a need for deep understanding about philosophical truths which is gained through many lifetimes.

In Hinduism, there are four yogas (Hindu for discipline) which lead to moksha. They are Supreme labor, Supreme realization, Supreme meditation, and Supreme service. Most schools of thought place varying emphasis on these four, but theoretically any one yoga could lead a soul to moksha.

One thing that ties together Eastern and Western religions is a belief that an ascetic lifestyle is the most sure path to enlightenment and a deeper understanding of life's truths, resulting in Heaven or moksha. Asceticism is a life which attempts to remove the focus on worldly pleasures in order to allow one's mind to more fully contemplate spiritual matters. Chastity, poverty, and abstinence from drugs/alcohol/gambling (and other addictive behaviors) are typically the central tenets of an ascetic's life.

Many New Age Christians believe that reincarnation was taught in early Christianity, especially the "Desert Fathers." Early Church councils purged most of these elements from the Scriptures as "heretical," but some still survive. In the Gospel of John, the Jews ask John the Baptist if he is actually Elijah, demonstrating an understanding of the concept of reincarnation.

I believe in reincarnation. Do you?

Perhaps your hypocrisy will lead you to be a gay prostitute in your next life, PIMike, and with any luck I'll accrue enough good karma to come back as your pimp!

As a very firm believer in the tenets of agnosticism, I am bound to reply, "I don't know."

In fact I take it a step further and say, "It can't currently be known." The implication being that this, like all little packages of religious details, are basically man-made hooey.

Which is not to say I don't find the topic of reincarnation interesting and even mind-boggling in some ways. I understand why people want so badly to believe stuff like this. I personally can't make the leap from "wanting it really bad" to actually believing, but an awful lot of humans can.

I am also not saying I find it impossible. I simply say, "I don't know." (Although if I had to lay a bet down, I would bet against reincarnation.)

Mind-boggling though. The nature of a consciousness. When you're gone are you really gone forever? Forever is a very, very long time. When a baby sea turtle is eaten by birds 3 seconds after it is born, is that really it for that consciousness?

Speaking of pandas, when a mother gives birth to 2 babies, she has to decide which one lives. So the other was born and was given a consciousness simply to starve to death. How fukked up is that? No wonder people look for greater cosmic justices through religion.

The one semi-related thing that I feel is a real possibility comes from my background in astrophysics. I believe there is a still a lot to learn about the nature of time. It could be circular or elastic. It seems entirely possible to me that it repeats and we will live these lives over and over. You could play around with the concept of free will, and even theorize about variations to the consciousness as time repeats.

I realize this has nothing to do with the concept of karma per se, but I do come to a similar conclusion: that we better do the best we can with our time.

I always love your posts, Mudcat, and this one was no exception. I totally understand you position, too. It comes down to that old saw "No reason is sufficient for those without faith, and those without faith need no reason." Perhaps it doesn't paint my belief in God in the most intelligent light, but since I don't force it on anyone else, the fact that it comforts me is justification enough.

The quote above summed it all up quite nicely. It would be nice to see people place a greater importance on their moment-to-moment decisions and behaviors, because that's the only way we can truly improve the quality of our time on the planet. It's a daily struggle for me, to realize that being a good person is more in the details than the sweeping gestures of giving to charity and volunteering my time.

As an aside, do you watch Fringe, Mudcat? It's a new show on Fox, Tuesday nights. I think it would strongly appeal to someone with your background and intellect. Thanks again for such a sincere and thought-provoking post.

I hope I didn't seem like I was ridiculing your beliefs RS. That wasn't my intention. I don't always choose my words in the most diplomatic way.

I have not seen Fringe. It hasn't really hit my radar, to tell you the truth. Tuesday is my night for pool playing so maybe that's why. Now that I'm aware of it, I might start noticing more buzz about it and perhaps even tape it on a Tuesday. (Lord knows there's not much else I can be bothered taping these Tuesdays.)

I didn't take one iota of offense, Mudcat. My beliefs work for me, and I don't need outside validation for them, nor to push them on others. How else do you explain an openly bisexual Catholic that still attends Mass every week?

I hope you get a chance to check out Fringe, it's really something special. In addition to being a totally new take on a science based crime drama, it also has limited commercial breaks that have a pre-announced length. "Fringe will return in xx seconds." Most are 60 seconds, a couple are 90 seconds.

The premise is a psychologically disturbed physicist is released from an asylum to assist the FBI in tracking scientific terrorism. He's assisted by his estranged son who attempts to keep him focused on the task at hand, rather than wandering off talking to himself. Really great writing, solid acting, and like you said, Tuesdays are a no man's land with the current network shows.

That does sound intriguing. I guess it all depends on the execution. I'll try to remember to tape it next Tuesday.

It is ringing a few bells now. Is it from the guy that did Buffy The Vampire Slayer?

I watched a somewhat interesting new show last night. Lie To Me. It has Tim Roth whom I like a helluva lot. It's a shame that this is probably an indication that his movie prospects are on the decline.

But the premise is he is an expert at lie detection through observing body language and facial expressions. It was quite good and somewhat educational. I could see the premise getting old fast, but I think it earned another chance at least.
