GAME NOTES: The Santa Clara Broncos will try to continue their dominance over the San Jose State Spartans when the two teams collide this evening at the Leavey Center.
The Spartans saw their two-game winning streak come to an end the last time they were on the court, as the team suffered a 93-69 setback to Northern Colorado. It was the fifth loss on the season for SJSU and also dropped the team's road ledger to 2-4 on the year.
As for the Broncos, they have won five of their last seven games, including a thrilling 54-53 decision over Pacific in their last contest. The Broncos have enjoyed some success at home this year, posting a 4-2 mark at the Leavey Center.
This will be the 100th meeting between the two schools on the hardwood. Through the first 99 matchups the Broncos have pounded San Jose State, winning 71 times.
The Spartans put forth a solid effort in their last contest, but the team was clearly overmatched against Northern Colorado. San Jose State shot 43.8 percent in the contest, and also connected on 23-of-25 attempts from the foul line. Adrian Oliver poured in 26 points in the loss, while C.J. Webster and Justin Graham tallied 16 and 11 points, respectively. Oliver has been the best player on the floor for SJSU throughout the season and is currently leading the way with 19.6 ppg. Graham is contributing 11.1 ppg and has dished out a team-best 44 assists, while Webster is chipping in with 9.4 ppg. As a whole the Spartans have been mediocre at best, averaging 73.0 ppg, behind a 44.2 percent shooting effort.
The Broncos might have a winning ledger on the year, but the team has struggled offensively, netting just 67.4 ppg, behind a mere 40.5 percent shooting effort. Another reason for Santa Clara's struggles is due to the loss of Kevin Foster and his 19.8 ppg. Without Foster on the floor the team has had to rely more on Marc Trasolini, who is posting 14.7 ppg and 6.7 rpg. Robert Smith is shooting a woeful 32.5 percent shooting effort from the floor, but he is still helping out with 10.8 ppg. The last time the Broncos were in action the team only scored 54 points, but still got past Pacific by a one-point margin. Santa Clara only shot 38.6 percent in the game, and was led by Trasolini and his 17 points. Ben Dowdell added 12 points off the bench in the win.
The Broncos have not been overwhelming offensively, but the team should do enough tonight to grab a win at home over San Jose State.
