The North Carolina Tar Heels, with their wonderful combination of talent, youthful exuberance and experience, are the early favorites on many betting boards around the sportsbook world to win the 2007 men’s NCAA basketball championship.
Carolina, which went 23-8 last year after losing its top seven scorers from that 2005 national championship team, is posted at +500 at TheGreek.com to take another title back to Tobacco Road next April.
Tar Heels’ head coach Roy Williams did as good a job as he ever has last season, guiding a talented but very young team to a second-place finish in the ACC. Going into the NCAA tournament, UNC was on a roll, and a chic pick to advance deep in many brackets. But the Heels became Cinderella George Mason’s second victim in the second round, ending their season.
This season, North Carolina returns four starters from last year, and added one of the top recruiting classes in the nation. The Tar Heels never seem to run out of ammunition; they just reload during the offseason.
The defending national champion Florida Gators, who return all five starters from last season, follow North Carolina on the national championship betting board at TheGreek.com at +600. Coach Billy Donovan’s crew made a great late-season run last spring, combining solid play at both ends of the court to earn a Final Four spot. Then the Gators put an end to George Mason’s Impossible Dream, and bounced UCLA 73-57 in the title game.
The Kansas Jayhawks, whose high hopes were dashed early in the Big Dance last spring, pop up next on the list at TheGreek.com at +800 to win it all this season. KU won the Big 12 last season, and had a No. 4 seed in the tournament. But the Jayhawks became upset victims when an underrated Bradley team took them out in the first round.
The Ohio State Buckeyes are the top Big 10 team on the board at TheGreek.com at +1200 to win the national title this season. OSU won the conference title last year, and owned a No. 2 tournament seed. But they also fell early, to Georgetown in the second round.
Perennial power Duke and national runner-up UCLA are paired at +1500 at TheGreek.com to win it all this year. The Dukies won their first 17 games last season and again claimed the ACC title. But all in all, Duke may have been a bit overrated, and the top-seed Blue Devils fell to LSU in the regional semis. Now they’ll have to replace guard J.J. Redick and his 27 points per game. Still, Duke is a threat almost every season to win the national title.
UCLA, probably the best team west of the Rockies again this year, made a great late-season run to the Final Four last spring, and only a great Florida team kept them from adding to their trophy display case.
Another Final Four qualifier of a season ago, the LSU Tigers, are grouped with the Texas Longhorns and the Georgetown Hoyas at +1800 to win the national title this season at TheGreek.com. Following that troika are the Connecticut Huskies, coming off that disappointing loss to George Mason in the regional finals last spring, at +2000 to win this season’s title.
The Kentucky Wildcats, who struggled through a 22-13 campaign last year, are matched with an SEC rival, the Arkansas Razorbacks, at +2500 to win the national championship this season at TheGreek.com.
Another SEC team, the Alabama Crimson Tide, are posted alongside the feline triumvirate of the Arizona Wildcats, the Memphis Tigers and the Pittsburgh Panthers at +3000 at TheGreek.com to win the title this season.
The Zags of Gonzaga are listed at +3500 to become unlikely national champs this season. They're followed by the Fighting Illini of Illinois, the Louisville Cardinals, the Oklahoma State Cowboys, Bruce Pearl’s rising Tennessee Volunteers, the Stanford Cardinal and the mostly unknown Texas A&M Aggies, all posted at +4000 to win the title.
The PAC 10’s Washington Huskies come next on the national championships betting board at TheGreek.com at +4500. And five teams, Georgia Tech, North Carolina State, Iowa, Michigan State and Wisconsin, are all listed at +5000 to win it all this year.
And finally, a couple of Big East powers, the Syracuse Orangemen and the Villanova Wildcats, are posted at +6000 and +6600, respectively, at TheGreek.com to win the national title this season.
TheGreek.com offers odds on 63 teams individually to win this season’s NCAA men’s basketball national title. The field, which includes every other team in Division 1 not listed among those 63, is posted at just +1200, probably thanks in part to George Mason’s unexpected run last spring.
The 2007 men’s NCAA Final Four will be played March 31 & April 2 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
