    Georgia player killed in wreck
Kevin Brophy, a 21-year-old junior on Georgia's basketball team, died in a two-car accident Thursday night near Greensboro.

Brophy was driving home alone to Savannah from Athens in a late-model BMW owned by his girlfriend, Molly Ramage. His car collided with another vehicle, according to police. Brophy died at the scene.

Police said a severe thunderstorm in the area may have been a contributing factor.

"From what I know, he was leaving Athens to go back to the family he lived with [in Savannah]," Greene County Sheriff Chris Houston said. "Some severe weather had come through the area and, in fact, the DOT had to be called out to remove some trees from the road."

Georgia head coach Dennis Felton and assistant coach Pete Hermann drove to Greensboro and identified the body, according to Houston.

Police said Brophy was traveling south on Georgia Highway 15 just across the Oconee County line north of Greensboro. A female was driving north on the same highway. The center line was crossed, but by which car was not immediately known. The collision killed Brophy.

The other driver, whose name was not released, was from Greene County and was life-flighted to Grady Hospital with serious injuries.

Brophy had worked at a basketball clinic for the Boys and Girls Clubs at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens until about 4 p.m. Thursday, according to Georgia spokesman Tim Hix. The time of the accident was not immediately available.

A native of Australia, Brophy's family remains in Melbourne. Georgia had not released any information as of early Friday morning, pending notification of the family.

Brophy moved to Savannah as an exchange student in 2003 to play basketball at Memorial Day School and seek a college scholarship while living with a surrogate family.

"I couldn't have asked for a better kid if he was my own," said Mark Sussman, the athletics director at Memorial Day and a member of the family with whom Brophy lived the past three years. "He came to this country to play basketball and get his education.
"His dream was to play at a big-time college and he was able to do that."

Brophy, a 6-foot-1 guard, walked on at Georgia but earned a scholarship after playing in 28 games and starting eight as a true freshman. He averaged 3.8 points a game, had 38 assists and scored a career-high 19 points against Vanderbilt in 2004-05.

Brophy played less last season, averaging 10 minutes in 18 games and scoring just under a point a game. He represented Australia in the 2005 World University Games in Turkey.
At Memorial Day, Brophy averaged 28.4 points and set the school's single-season assist record (424) in 2003.
Brophy did not play his senior season because the Georgia Independent School Association ruled that his four-year window of eligibility had expired.
