In recent years there have been questions regarding the NBA Draft lottery process, with teams making moves during the latter stages of the season in order to improve their chances of earning the top overall pick. Teams in that position have denied “tanking” on purpose, but the league still feels the need to do something in order to eliminate the possibility.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the NBA is actively looking to implement reform measures that could be voted into legislation before the start of the 2017-18 season. According to the report, the odds of the teams with the worst records winning the draft lottery would be decreased, with non-playoff teams with better records having a better chance of moving up in the draft order.
Under the current rules the team with the worst record has a 25 percent chance of obtaining the top overall pick, with those odds dropping to 19.9 percent for the team with the second-worst record. The team with the best record among the 14 non-playoff teams has a 0.5 percent chance of winning the NBA Draft lottery.
“If passed, the lottery reform would be phased into use over time, and there’s no indication that the 2018 NBA draft would fall under new legislation, league sources said,” via ESPN.
The NBA’s Competition Committee, a committee comprised of several general managers and coaches from around the league, is reportedly expected to vote at a meeting next week on sending a formal recommendation to the board of governors for final passage.
