Having played in China for the last eight seasons, point guard Stephon Marbury is approaching the twilight of his professional basketball career. The fourth overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft, Marbury is preparing for his final season in China as a member of the Beijing Fly Dragons after spending the prior six seasons with the Beijing Ducks.
A legend in China, Marbury has apparently begun considering the possibility of playing again stateside before calling it a career. Marbury responded to tweets Wednesday night, discussing the NBA and the BIG3 as leagues he may look to get involved with once his season with the Fly Dragons is completed.
As noted above the move to China has been a positive one for Marbury, who led the Ducks to their first CBA championship in 2012. Shortly thereafter, the team unveiled a statue of the point guard, who would go on to lead the Ducks to two more championships in 2014 and 2015. With one last season left to play in China, it’s understandable that Marbury would look to make a return stateside.
Marbury’s time in the NBA didn’t end the way he likely planned, as his contract was bought out by the New York Knicks in February 2009 and he decided to sit out the 2009-10 campaign after not agreeing to a one-year deal with the Boston Celtics.
Whether or not Stephon Marbury would receive another shot in the NBA depends upon multiple factors, including how he plays this season. But given his status, one would think that Marbury would be an attractive option for BIG3 founder Ice Cube to consider for the summer of 2018.
